Apple is working on AI programming assistance for Xcode in the run-up to WWDC

Apple is currently working on implementing generative AI, i.e. artificial intelligence, that can create “own” content in various software areas. It can be assumed that numerous new tools and app functions for iOS 24, macOS 18, etc. will be presented at the start of WWDC15 in June. But AI help should also be used on the other side of the software offering - namely for developers. Apple's programming platform Xcode is to be equipped with generative AI to bring faster programming, more efficient debugging and other advantages. In addition, Apple is competing with Microsoft’s programming AI “GitHub Copilot”.

It is certain that Apple will present various AI developments and their implementation in iOS 24, macOS 18 and Co. during WWDC15. But you should also be able to benefit from generative AI on the developer side, for example in Xcode. You can find details about this here.

Apple is working on generative AI for software development

For Apple, the focus in the current race to catch up is not (in all areas) direct competition with existing AI products. Even if a ChatGPT alternative is already used internally, it is unlikely to be released as a single chatbot. Rather, Apple wants to equip its own systems, apps and services with customized AI.

The aim is to make the associated tasks (word processing, image editing, etc.) easier. Where this makes a lot of sense is, of course, in the development of software. Manually coding iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch and other programs is a time-consuming process and could be shortened using a helpful AI tool. At least in some areas.

Not just write code, but also test it

With the help of AI it should... Xcode In the future, however, it will not only be possible to develop programs or at least certain sections of them. You should also be able to design test scenarios in order to test the app in advance Beta test or to check your own test that was carried out beforehand for errors. This would allow bugs to be found and fixed more quickly.

Certain code errors that lead to crashes or command loops can also be identified directly in order to release software that already works in its basics for testing - for example using the software intended for this purpose TestFlight program. It is also possible that the TestFlight backend will be equipped with AI functions or at least with links to the Xcode tools.

What is GitHub Copilot?

As already mentioned at the beginning, Apple would not be the first provider of professional AI programming assistance. The developer platform GitHub, which has been part of Microsoft since the end of 2018, was z. B. already with Microsoft's AI tool Copilot equipped to help with programming and code repair. According to the company's own information, GitHub Copilot ensures 55% faster programming.

In order to determine these and other values, an extensive study was carried out, for which, among other things, 2.000 developers were interviewed. The results you can find here. The data has now been available for almost two years and – along with many other sources – could have helped Apple to develop the new Xcode tool in a targeted manner.

When will WWDC24 take place?

It can be assumed that Apple's World Wide Developers Conference will take place in June 2024. This is traditionally the month for this week-long event about the new operating systems, developer information and the exchange of the programming community. Since the first half of the month is usually used for the event, you should be prepared for the start of WWDC3 on June 10rd or 2024th, 24.

The training week for developers is always opened with a corresponding event Keynote, i.e. a presentation with information about the operating systems coming in autumn. In addition to details about the new Xcode, we should also find out which AI elements will be in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 and Co.
