Carry out glasses repairs yourself with the spare parts set

Repair glasses yourself with the glasses repair kit

I don't wear glasses, but I recently had broken glasses. My safety glasses, which I use when climbing, suddenly lost their temple in the climbing hall. The reason for this was a small screw that had loosened by itself and then was lying around somewhere in the hall.

I quickly gave up trying to find it again and made friends with a visit to an optician who would probably have asked for 10 euros for the repair with a replacement screw.

Search for spare part sets for glasses

When I got home, I wanted to see if there weren't any sets with replacement screws for the typical eyeglass threads. A short research showed that there are complete sets with screws, screwdrivers, tweezers and even nosepiece plates and the like for less than 10 euros.

You won't be able to repair a broken bracket with it, but it should be able to find a suitable screw for my needs. So I have without further ado ordered a glasses repair kit from Amazon. After a few days it arrived and I was able to take the practical test.

The glasses repair set contains over 500 screws in different sizes. What they all have in common is that they are pretty tiny. For this reason, matching mini screwdrivers and tweezers are also included.

Challenge: Find the right screw

In addition to the screwdrivers in various sizes, a pair of tweezers and a microfiber cloth, the set also includes a lot of screws. Probably enough to repair around 500 pairs of glasses. Oh yes, a couple of nosepieces and ear pieces are also included.

In my case, a screw was missing to attach the temple to the glasses again. Of course it was in the set, but it took a few minutes to find the right one. These things are really small and finding the difference between the screws is for people without eagle eyes or loupes really hard. So it comes down to a few rounds of trial and error.

Once you have found the right screw, the rest is easy with the supplied watchmaker's screwdrivers.

My conclusion on the glasses repair kit

After I found the screw, the rest of the work went pretty briskly. Screw in the screw, try the bracket and you're done. With the large selection of screws, there should be something suitable for every pair of glasses.

I don't know what an optician would have charged for the repair. But I would have given him a tip of 5 euros myself for a free repair. If you offset the purchase price of 10 to 15 euros for such a set, you might not be cheaper for the first repair. An invaluable advantage of such a set, however, is that you no longer have to drive through the area, which is a big time factor, especially here in rural areas.

    Hi,
The same thing happened to me with my safety glasses ... It looks like we have the same model. Do you possibly still know the size or the diameter of the said screw?

Hello alice! No, unfortunately no clue. The screws were completely unsorted in the package and I have no idea what the appropriate size for a name is. You could unscrew and measure the screw on the other side to know more about it. : D
