Solved: changing the primary email address in the Google account

Delete GMail from account

The following problem arose with me yesterday: I had my Google account as normal with an email address that was linked to my domain name @ net-tec-online.de ends. This was the login for my Google account. Yesterday I had the site while surfing for some reason www.googlemail.com called and was apparently asked there whether I would like to use GMail.

I was apparently mentally deranged and clicked "yes". To be honest, I can't even remember the question. In any case, the result was that from now on I had a pretty stupid email address that went on @ googlemail.com ended, was visible in Google. This also affected the usernames under which I was visible to customers in shared Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics accounts.

What happened?

Google obviously did when visiting www.googlemail.com an old Gmail address, which I set up for testing purposes only, was used as the primary email address for the Google account. Somehow he apparently remembered it and then linked my normal Google account to the Gmail address.

With the change of the primary email address, the login to my Google account has also changed. But I definitely didn't want to have to log in with this stupid test email address all the time - that's why I was looking for how to change the primary email address in the Google account.

Instructions: How to change the primary email address in the Google account

... if you have NOT linked a GMail address. The instructions that I found described very easily the steps that I came up with before: You go https://www.google.com/settings/personalinfo and click there in the box “Email addresses & phone numbers” on edit. Most people will then have a button next to the "Primary Email Address" field to edit that email. For me, however, there was only the strange googlemail.com e-mail and there was no way to change it.

Delete GMail from account
Almost there: This is how you delete GMail from your Google account and you have the option of entering your own email address as the primary email address.

Change primary email address DESPITE Google Mail account

After a few other forum posts I came across the solution: The problem is that you cannot change the GMail address once it has been used as the primary email address of a Google account. If you want to have them gone, there is only one way: You have to delete the GMail service for your account. But first you have to create an alternative email address for the account. You can do this via this link https://accounts.google.com/b/0/UpdateAccountRecoveryOptions?hl=de with the button "Add an alternative email address“. There you wear your desired "primary email address” and confirms this via the verification email.

Then you go the following way:

  1. Log in to his Google account
  2. then select “Data tools"
  3. There is a link to “Delete products"
  4. in this window you then click on “delete gmail” and confirm that you want to delete the Gmail account

After that, the alternative email address was my primary email address again. Operation successful, patient alive! :)

    1. Glad to hear that! I was also quite desperate when I had stupidly pretended to be without brains and intellect. I was hoping that I'm not the only one who's so dumb. ;)

      1. Thank you thank you and thank you again!!! I was so thoughtless today and activated Gmail on my chromebook... and boom, I had the dilemma... all cell phone contacts on Whatsapp were only displayed as phone numbers and this stupid Gmail address was everywhere! Your tips helped!

  1. A thousand thanks. My colleague had left the account for a while, he was new to Android. Now I was really desperate ^^ how I can get it out of the primary e-mail address. ^^

    1. Hello Millipilli! I assume you have an email that ends with @ gmail.com or @ googlemail.com? Then the username is the part that is before. You can request this via this page from Google: https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery/forgotusername
However, you still need to know a few things that you stated when you registered. If you don't know them either, then it will be difficult to find out. Good luck anyway!

  2. Hi. I see that someone else has my mail? And should I enter my e-mail address in the gap or something else?
    Thanks for the reply.

    1. Hello Sedef! To be honest, I don't quite understand the question. If in doubt, the best thing to do is to contact Google support. They should be able to help you. VG!

  3. hey Google wants to have an EXTERNAL email address, because I don't know what "external" means, I can't get any further. Can anyone help me?

    1. Hello Luisa! By "external" they mean an email that is not held by Google and ends with @googlemail.com or @gmail.de. For example, you could get a free email from web.de or gmx.de and then enter it there. This e-mail is, so to speak, security in case you forget the access data for the Google address, because then Google can send you a link to reset your password to the “external” e-mail address. Best regards!

  4. I want to change my Gmail address, but it sounds risky if I just have to delete my Gmail. What about all the connected Google services such as AdSense, Analytics, etc. that are retained? Will I also receive related emails to my new email address? Do AdSense codes need to be changed? Questions about questions ...

    1. You can change the address. You don't have to delete Gmail to do this. If you did that, all of the services might also be affected. You can choose this when deleting an account. But as I said: you want to change the email address with which you log in. It's not risky.

  5. Hello, yes it's me again ..: D
Managed to change the primary email. Can I still use GMAIL somehow? Namely, I have the feeling that it is a bit risky ..
I checked it now .. If I want to use GMAIL (again), it will show the old primary e-mail ..

    1. Hello! Actually, Gmail should continue to run normally after changing the primary email address. You still have your GMail account ... and you can hardly call up your new email address via Gmail, which does not end in @ gmail.com. So I would say it's all ok. Changing the email address is only relevant for the login process ... and of course for notifications and so on ...

    1. Yes, the email is only important for registration. Your calendar stays as usual. Just like Google Docs and similar services ...

  6. Max Falkenstein

    Thanks alot!
I've been trying to change my "embarrassing" Gmail address for ages.
I created this with my nickname at the age of 13 and it now turns into a dilemma every time I have to give my email address to someone from work xD

I really thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  7. MANY THANKS - My salvation. I had created a gmail for a friend for her smartphone from my smartphone and she had automatically entered it into my Google account.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

  8. THANKSEEEEE You saved me <3: * spent hours looking for a solution and couldn't believe it really worked: D
I couldn't believe at all that someone else had exactly the same problem xD and (for whatever reason) "acquired" a Gmail address: D
also do not know how I managed to create a Gmail account or to link it to xD

    THANKEEEEEEEE <3

  9. Thank you!
Just set up my account on a smartphone and discovered that I'm signed in with @googlemail. How to get there, I don't know.
But thanks to your guidance, that's history now.
    Thank you!

  10. Thanks! I felt really powerless. I wanted to beat the Google guys ... They screwed up so much shit with this account story ... Your only salvation is that you don't have a smart alternative ...

    Thanks again!!!

  11. So what bad!
This also happened to me because of some app, because I could only log in there with a gmail address, ok, you can already log in to gmail for that.
But that ALL accounts always run via this new address is outrageous.
    Thanks for your guidance.
Now I'm curious to see what I can no longer use on which device, but it doesn't matter. Testing is above studying.

  12. hello, Sir Apfelot….
I came across your site very well. My husband has the same problem with his smartphone with the G mail address ... .. I've logged into the Google account ... now I'm searching ... where, please, can I find the setting for the menu, i.e. data tools?
am at a loss for sth.

  13. I just stumbled across this post because I'm trying to set up my @ domain.de address as the primary address myself.
My problem with this thing: I also use the @ gmail.com address and can therefore not permanently delete it. Can you add it again as a secondary email address to the same account afterwards ???

    1. Hello Benni! I can't tell you exactly since I haven't tried it, but as I could see at the time, the "primary email address" was really completely gone and out of the system. For that reason, it should actually be free to use as a second email address.

  14. WOW! I honestly looked for Google's support email for more than an hour because this problem has been bothering me for months. Was hacked back then and luckily managed to save everything, only the primary email address was stubborn.
Thanks to your tip, I can now sleep peacefully again - thanks for that! (even if your post is already a few years old) :)

    1. Hello Claas! I'm glad that the post still helps save people's nerves. :) Apparently not much has changed in the procedure. That's good to know! LG!

  15. Hello, it may sound silly but where is the button “add alternative email address”?? When I go to the link, I can't find it. When setting up my smartphone, I was given a stupid gmail address that Google says I can't change because it identifies my Google account. I added a second google gmail account. Can I just delete the stupid gmail address??

  16. Hallo,
What about the APPs that I bought in the past?
will they be retained if i change the gmail address?
I mean, if I delete my current Google service, what happens to all the services, registrations, app links ………….?

    1. Hello Arthur! I don't have Android and can therefore only make my guess: The email is not THE account. By changing the primary email address, your personal Google account with all Gmails and similar data will be retained. Just as safe are purchases from the Playstore. If you have given your email address as access (login) for other services of third parties that do not belong to Google, then you have to change the mail there separately or continue to log in with your old mail.
      Best regards!

      Jens

  17. I have a similar problem. I have reset my phone to factory settings, now the phone asks me for my primary email as soon as I turn it on. I deleted this email some time ago and made a new gmail address. So now when I enter the primary email I get the error message “Google account could not be found”…what can I do now?

    1. Hello Marie! In your case you deleted the old account and created a new Gmail account. That means you have to sign in to your mobile phone with the new Gmail address. All data and settings from the old account were lost when they were deleted and cannot be retrieved. I'm sorry ... VG! Sir Apfelot ...

      1. Hello! Thanks for the answer. But unfortunately the registration with the new e-mail does not work either. I just deleted the email itself, I didn't delete it from the Google account. Strangely, I can also log into the Google account on the PC with the old e-mail. Unfortunately, changing the primary email address in my Google account doesn't work ...

        1. Hello Marie! If you can still log into the old account on the PC, then from my point of view it cannot be deleted. Is it possible that you are using the wrong password on your mobile phone? Otherwise I can't think of anything else ... :(

          1. I was only able to log in to the PC when I restored the email. It still didn't work on the mobile phone, the password was 100% correct: D
I think that at some point it was simply blocked because of the theft protection, because I entered email and password so often (always the same) (could that be?) I was so desperate because I also need the cell phone for work, that I have now unlocked it again at Samsung for much too expensive € 50 ...

          2. Hello Marie! Great that everything is working fine for you now. But annoying because of the 50 EUR. That "hurts" a bit... :(

  18. Hello Sir Apfelot
I want to send emails by voice command. However, not through my Google account, but through a t-online account.
Can I do the same with the instructions?

    1. Hello Helmut! Interesting question. But no, the primary email address really only applies to signing up for any Google services. In order to be able to send e-mails via your T-Online address on the iPhone, you must set up this e-mail under “Settings” -> “Mail, Contacts, Calendar”. Telekom offers instructions on how to do this here. I hope this helps you further…

  19. Unfortunately, the patient will never forget your test address, so a new Gmail address will never be available. If you want that, you have to completely re-register with Google. Adsense and Adwords accounts can be moved. Unfortunately, you have to make webmaster tools separately for each page.

    1. Comment from Sir Apfelot: Well, I didn't quite understand the comment. I still unlocked it in the hope that it would help someone. :) I would be surprised if you can't use another Googlemail address as the primary email address in your Google account. However, I have not tried it.

      1. You can possibly do that. But if you reactivate Gmail for THIS account, you will be assigned this address again and again, as you have experienced here. If you want to choose a new Gmail address, you have to open a new Google account.

  20. hey have a question on this topic,

i have registered the same email address as a google account on two mobile phones now i would like to manage both mobile phones with their own address, since one is used operationally.
The problem is that both cell phones are syncronized when creating contacts on both cell phones. I would like to manage both phones separately, but not lose any contacts for now. How can I achieve this

    1. Hello Gerd! Actually, that's a question for the Android faction, which I don't belong to. But I would say that you only have to enter the new Google account on the second cell phone. Then the new data will be synchronized there. The contacts should only be "lost" on the second cell phone, since the contact list of the new account is empty. With iOS, you can also use the iCloud settings to specify whether contacts should be synchronized or not. If you also have this function with you, then you should even be able to "save" the contacts with it...
      LG!

      Jens

    2. In any case, you have to create a completely new Google account. If you really want to separate it completely, it makes sense to reset your “work phone” to factory settings and set it up again with the new account.

You can export the contacts on the PC via the web interface in the old Google account. Then you will get a file that you can re-import into the new Google account. After the first synchronization, these should then also be available again on the mobile phone.

  21. Hi, it all sounds great.
My problem is that my google address is not firstname.lastname@gmail.com it is something completely stupid that was created several years ago ...
I now also run a YouTube channel. Will this then be retained ?! Just like Google Calendar. I was able to infer from an earlier comment that the appointments will be retained, but what about the name? If I now accept an appointment that has been sent to me, or if I myself have a request, there is always my unsuitable Gmail.
I would be very happy to receive an answer! =)

    1. Hello Maartinio! So as I understood it (and what was the case with me at the time), the only thing that really changes is the email address for logging into all of Google services such as Youtube, etc. Your channel is retained, but you log into Future with the new email address. But all without guarantee. :-)

    2. Everything will be changed and all services of your account will remain unchanged. YouTube channels are also not affected by a change of address. But then you can't use Gmail anymore. If you ever want to use Gmail again, you will have the problem that you will get your unsuitable address back. So you will never get rid of the “memory” of it.

If you want to use Gmail with a new address, you need to create a new Google account. If you set up a brand new Google account, you can also transfer a YouTube channel.

  22. I have a new email account, no longer “…@arcor.de” but “…..@T-Online.de”. So far I got security warnings sent to the Arcor account. I've been trying for hours to switch to the new T-Online account, but I can't find a place where it works.

    1. Hello Sylvia! And my instructions don't help you with the problem? It describes exactly this process. But maybe the google page has changed by now ... I haven't checked again.

  23. Hi,
thank you for the great article!
I have a question: If I delete the Gmail address from the Google account, will this also delete the Gmail email account? Or does it persist and is simply no longer linked to this Google account?
    Thank-you! :)
    Regards
    Lena

    1. Hello Lena! So if you delete it as a service, then all data about it will also be deleted. This means that if you delete the YouTube service from the Google account, all YouTube data will be deleted. If you delete Gmail, all Gmail data will also be deleted. I hope I got the question right ... it sounds so natural. :) But if you delete something, it will be kept for a certain time so that you can definitely restore it if you make a mistake. So if you accidentally do it, it won't all be gone ...

    2. The other way around, Lena. The address remains reserved for you, but is deactivated and the mail account with the data stored in it is deleted.

  24. For those who doubt the credibility of such a forum post, here are the official instructions that describe it exactly as follows:
    https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1045580?hl=de

Here is an excerpt from the page that may be important:

    exceptions:

If you use a Gmail address for your account, it is currently not possible to change your Gmail username after registering. However, you can create a new Google Account with a different Gmail username.
It is not possible to change the email address on your account to an existing Gmail address. However, you can add a new Gmail address to your Google Account.
You cannot use an email address that is already assigned to another Google Account to change the email address of your Google Account.

!!! HERE NOW THE IMPORTANT PART !!!

If you want to make your alternate email address the new primary address, you must first remove your alternate email address from your account. The account username you choose must be an active, valid email address that you can access.

    Alternative email addresses

In addition to your primary email address, you can add alternate email addresses to your account and use them for login, password recovery, and other options. The list of alternative email addresses added to your account can be found in your account settings at any time. For more information on alternate email addresses, see Google Accounts Help.

If you're using G Suite, you won't be able to add an alternate email address to your account.

    1. Hello Severin! Sorry, I had to edit your comment a bit so that only the important paragraphs remain in it. Otherwise it will be too confusing here. But anyway, thank you very much for your advice! And sorry that the comment function deleted part of your comment. I guess she doesn't like things in angle brackets ...

      1. Hi all,
Now it got me too ...

The primary address has now changed to a gmail address.
        Was before: blahbla@bla.com
        Now it reads: blabla@gmail.com

So that I can use the old (alternative) address as the primary one, I must first remove the (old) alternative address from the account.
This only applies to the point alternative address?
or the point “Address for account recovery”
        and “Contact Email Address” and
and “Contact address from the About me field”.

Now what do I do next? After removing the old address from the “alternative address” item.

        1. Hello Stas Ko! To be honest, I can't remember what the administration at Google looks like. But you may still need to secure a new address with a provider, which you can then use as a new “alternate address”. It would be possible that Google would always want an entry there. LG! Jens

  25. Hello Apfelot,
I hope I can join in here again.
Many years ago I set up a Google account and it ended with * .googlemail, com with the email I registered many programs, etc. Then came the nice short * .gmail.com and I loved using it. Now some registrations have the old and the new ending. Don't look through it anymore and would like to switch everything to * .gmail.com. just how do I get it done for PC, smartphone and mobile phone at the same time? I've already tried the primary change, but somehow errors appear everywhere?
Hmm, I really hope that you can understand my clutter.
    Best regards P.

      1. I don't see it that closely. And the email account with Google is independent of Apple ... so of course you will also get an answer. I actually only pass if I don't have a tip. : D

    1. Hello Petra! So I already understand your problem. I just think there is no automatic solution. For many services, the email is practically the login name for the user account. Accordingly, it must be used exactly as it was typed in. The only solution would be to change the email address for all services and then use the one with @ gmail.com everywhere. Then of course you have to change all of these logins on all devices (smartphone, tablet, etc.), as they can no longer log in after the change. So unfortunately all handwork and vegetables. :(

  26. Hi Sir Apfelot,
thank you for this extensive help. Unfortunately, I haven't really been able to fix my problem yet and can't find a solution anywhere. But maybe you know how:
I have often logged into Google with my work email address from home. Now I don't work there anymore and my email address has also been deactivated. Unfortunately, I can't take out the email address / account from Google because it's entered as the default (for whatever reason). Is there a trick how I can get this invalid and deactivated email address out of the selection function and standard setting of my Google account?
    Thank you!
    Maxi

    1. Hello maxi! I haven't quite understood it yet: You can't log in to change your email? But do you want to remove the login email? Unfortunately, this only works if you somehow get into your account. Or maybe I didn't quite get it, but the way I understood it, it can't work because Google only verifies that you are yourself through a login. VG! Jens

      1. hey jens,
        thanks for the quick reply.
Again to the facts: If I want to log in to GMail via Google.de, my blocked, old work mail is displayed to me as the standard account. Now I can no longer register there. And I would like to have this account out of the selection for registration.
In a nutshell - was that better explained: /?
        Thank you in advance!

        1. Hi Jens,
I was able to solve the problem with the help of technical support at my old job:

To do this, you have to click on the three dots in the top right corner of Google Chrome and click on settings. Scroll down to the bottom and click “Show More”. Then scroll down again and confirm the last point “Restore factory settings”. This automatically kicks out any accounts with Google and you have to log in from scratch on the Google/GMail site.
If the terms are not quite right: I use the whole thing in English, so there may be translation problems.

          Best regards,
          Maxi

          1. Hi Maxi! Thank you for your feedback. I think that sure helps some people who have the same problem. In that case, I wouldn't really have known what to do next. : D LG!

  27. Emmanuel Rodriguez

Even 6 years after this article was published, these instructions still work. Thank you for the great help;)!

  28. Many, many, many thanks for this tip !! Had a super embarrassing email address for years and now it's finally a thing of the past. You are a real angel ????

  29. Hello, important QUESTION:
I have a gmail address where my calendar is listed.
Can I add another email address, then use it as the primary address and delete the gmail and IMPORTANT my Google Calendar data is still there?
    Thank you very much

    1. Jen Kleinholz

Hello Johanna! I don't use Google Calendar, so I can't make any binding statements about it. To be on the safe side, I would ask Google directly. As a rule, however, you will receive a message as to what will be deleted if you delete your email address. I would test it, then you will know.

  30. Here too: even after such a long time, this problem solution is the savior in an emergency! (For me it was a Chrome book that activated gmail and thus an unwanted * .gmail.com address without my knowing permission.

    Thanks again!

    Thomas

  31. Jurgen Frasch

Thank you so much for this very helpful post.
Had also added a gmail address to the google account out of an emergency and it seemed like I would never get it away, which would have been a very big annoyance.

  32. Hi sir,
Desperate about Google's stupidity, I hope that you also know in my case what Google doesn't know about its system:

I have a somewhat flippant name on gmail and wanted a more serious account access with my normal name for more serious occasions. I entered the new name under “open another account”, should then receive a confirmation code on my other account (either the existing one with Google or somewhere else, space for entry was given and was used by me) and thus access to that get a new account. So I did it too.

But Google then sent the confirmation code to the new account on the 1st, 2nd and every time, where it didn't arrive because I had to enter this confirmation code for the new account before it worked. Now I don't know if I don't get it, if Google doesn't get it's own mechanism, or if I'm being deliberately scammed by Google for "other" reasons.

    Thanks in advance
    bp

    1. Hello Jochen! Unfortunately I have a similar problem and I can't solve it either. I also have a weird sounding Gmail address that suddenly became my main address on Google and is therefore visible to all my clients that I manage Google Ads for. :( I couldn't solve the problem even with phone google support and I'm just living with it now. I don't know what to do with you either. Didn't you also have to provide a cell phone number for recovery? If not, you will because unfortunately not get out of the loop, I'm afraid.

  33. Thanks for the prompt reply.

I don't remember what was requested many years ago, the trigger for the strange choice of name for my gmail account was certainly a general joke on the subject that I had been pushed into a fictitious dirty corner and am still in it after I've been elsewhere (letters to the editor via paper) apparently published undesirable opinions. I was put into jobs twice for 5 years where I was supposed to discredit myself with horrible things I didn't even know existed let alone how to do it. One was at the IBM plant in Berlin, where I was given the sacred code for the super-copier-with-fax-inside as an occasional external employee, so that veteran employees had to ask me about it – and make dry comments about it. Later, the “KGB hack” became a topic (it is not known to this day whether it even existed, but only – with the head of security at IBM WB, the current boss of the McGeiz chain – that I belonged to it or apparently invented it) , and after exactly five years (the inventors of such stories have a data-fetish obsession, everything has to happen 5 or 10 times) I was passed on to "Borland" in Munich, where the Heimsoeth+Vogel team was supposed to "promote the sale of Borland software in Germany". , but only, at Borland's expense, made sure that their employees learned everything about the Borland SW before they then switched to Microsoft Germany with this knowledge and skills. Correct, Heimsoeth was the company that invented the "Enigma" for the Nazis, which Poles and English dispute over who deciphered it first, while others point out that the Enigma's code was created from the start by the manufacturer Heimseoth himself , to which the other side had been betrayed (and it happened again a few years ago); Beate Vogel, on the other hand, was apparently identical to the Olivetti secretary who had spied for the East German Stasi, and was therefore predestined to do so. to unmask myself as a Stasi colleague. At that time, at the urging of others, I bought my first two expensive modems, both of which I never used because I never got the necessary SW *and documentation* for it... Since then I've been to blame for certain village idiots in certain western states for not especially everything but a lot, and in order to curb my extreme cleverness and destructiveness a little, I've been surrounded by watchdogs and snubs ever since. So if I get annoyed with Google because Google annoys me, access to my history is withdrawn - the case is already closed:

At Google, in connection with the current writing, other operations (email receipt 1-4 e-mails per day about the situation of 2 US sites) were interrupted for 4 days (the otherwise daily e-mails “were missing”, now Goo is letting 1 per day again through), and I can no longer view my Google History/correspondence either.

But I checked out Google's recent findings, including that I accessed the account I first used 3 months ago from a Yoga 10 32 tab just 21 minutes ago. No, all nonsense - but Google protects these illegal/criminal activities from investigation.

In fact, I've been using another Yoga Tab for years (also and correctly named), and bought another one on the junk 4 weeks ago, but with a different name and after a few hours on the first day (yes, works ok) it was silent lying in front of him. If I want to know more about "my" model "3 10", I should... (general chatter)... No, I want to know more about who is allowed into my account by Google, but I'm not allowed to know anything about it.

I leave it up to you whether you want to make this entire text accessible in whole or in part or not at all. Thank you again

    1. Hello Jochen! Of course, the whole comment will be published. It's exciting what you've already experienced. 😊 Of course, if Google were to actively prevent you from having access to the emails, then you probably won't receive any of the crucial emails. They have the reins in their hands. But I can't quite imagine that there's actually someone sitting there filtering emails... I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that it somehow resolves itself. Unfortunately I can do little to contribute. :-(

  34. Hello Jens, it actually works exactly as described! Thanks very much! Great, it's been bugging me for years that I couldn't change the login address. Google Photos, Drive etc. will continue to work with the new email address since the Google account will remain the same. And on my Android smartphone, I only had to enter the password again and everything continues as usual.
A big thank you again! :)

  35. I'm still in despair. When I enter an alternative email address, I get the message “gmail.com cannot be used in an alternative email address”

    1. Hi Dani! Unfortunately, I'm not really into Gmail. I wrote the post years ago and have hardly done anything with Gmail since then. I hope you find another source that can help you.

  36. Thank you very much for the tip. I hadn't clicked on the alternative Gmail function X times, but I did this one time.
With all the disadvantages: e.g. with Google Forms, Gmail is automatically used, I can't switch to the actual email. The forwarding was not taken over, so you have to access/maintain a second email account (Gmail) at the same time that you don't want to use.
