Crack in the glass of the Vision Pro - Isolated but consistent cases reported

According to several reports on the Reddit platform, some Apple “Vision Pro” devices have cracks in the front glass. This is not a case of fall or impact damage, but rather always the same problem: a sudden crack that runs from bottom to top in the middle. Sometimes the crack divides the lens of the Vision Pro from the nose recess all the way up to the forehead, sometimes just a few centimeters to around the middle. The reason is discussed as the different expansion of the aluminum on the inside and the glass on the outside. The functions of the VR glasses are not affected, and the reactions in the Apple Store have varied so far.

On some Apple Vision Pro models there is a straight crack in the front glass that runs from bottom to top. There are already discussions about the cause as well as reports from the Apple Store. The only thing missing is an official statement and instructions for employees from the manufacturer.

Apple Vision Pro: Straight crack from bottom to top

In all cases described, the crack in the front glass of the Apple Vision Pro occurs in the same way. The strong curvature in the nose recess seems to play a role. Tensions could arise here both in the glass itself and due to the combination of materials in the entire device. It cannot yet be said whether the plastic protective film on the glass plays a role.

The tensions that arise are increased when the device heats up during operation and the materials used expand to different degrees - and when they contract again when they cool down. Charging with the protective cover on can also lead to heat build-up and thus to material changes with possible consequential damage. In short: The exact causes and recommendations for preventing the damage are not yet 100% clear.

The Vision Pro's functionality does not appear to be limited

The crack does not seem to affect the use of the Apple Vision Pro so far. Although it runs in the middle in front of a sensor, this doesn't seem to interfere with the associated visionOS functions. Due to the crack in the front glass, there doesn't seem to be any movement of the front glass, which could possibly interfere with the cameras and other sensors. That's why some users say they don't go to the Apple Store and try to have the device exchanged or repaired.

It remains to be seen whether the crack will appear in a larger number of Vision Pro devices. It must now also be observed whether the cracks expand, lead to possible deformations or whether other parts of the glass crack. However, in layman's terms, I assume that the greatest tension has been released by the crack, that the plastic protective film on the outside holds everything together and that major damage, apart from the crack enlarging from the very bottom to the very top, could be avoided. This shouldn't have any further impact on usability either.

Various reactions from store staff

The reaction to the Vision Pro's glass damage seems to vary from Apple Store to Apple Store. This is entirely understandable, as Apple has not yet issued an official statement or instructions on how to proceed in the case. While the Vision Pro was exchanged directly in one store, the exchange or repair had to be paid for in the other store. By the way, with AppleCare+ the repair costs $299; without this optional insurance it costs $799.

Until Apple recognizes the damage as its own fault and offers an appropriate repair or exchange program, various in-store handling may continue. This is another reason why some people will probably wait to go to the Genius Bar. However, the program will probably not be as widespread as previous problems, such as the butterfly keyboard in MacBooks or the batteries in iPhones. It is currently assumed that only a certain margin of the Vision Pro is affected and that the excessive material tension is due to a production error that occurred there.

Crack Gate: Video from Jens on the subject of Vision Pro glass damage

After yesterday's preparatory work for this article, today, as I continued researching, I noticed that Jens had an interesting one Video on the topic on YouTube has published. In it he also shows some pictures, discusses the possible causes of Vision Pro glass damage and shows what reactions users encounter when they go to the Apple Store with it. Take a look if you want to get a complete picture of the matter:
