Chapter in this post:
With the right app, you can find out the color code on the Apple iPhone - regardless of whether it is from an object in front of the camera or from a photo stored in the memory. With specialized software, the colors can then be output as values such as RGB, CMYK, HSL, HEX, HSV and Lab. There are also offers that use the determined colors as RAL color code or output color value from Farrow & Ball, Schöner Wohnen, etc.
In the following I have summarized the information on two solutions for determining the color code on the iPhone. The second comes with an external Bluetooth device that is supposed to make the measurement more precise.
The app called ColorMeter RGB colorimeter von der White Marten GmbH can recognize individual colors using the camera as well as on saved photos, screenshots and web images. For further use of the color found, the respective values for the reproduction of the color tone can then be output in graphics programs - depending on the project and format, RGB, CMYK, HSL, HEX, HSV and Lab can be used. Furthermore, the appropriate CSS color is output.
If the color code has been recognised, the color name can also be announced via voice output. In addition, the values can be copied and extracted, for example for use in graphics apps on the Mac. ColorMeter RGB colorimeters are available in the App Store for €4,99. The reviews are mostly good, with an average of 4,4 out of 5 stars. One person states that RGB deviations are only in the +/-1 range. Another person managed the perfect white balance of the projector with it. And the app should also be helpful for people with color blindness.
If you are less interested in the digital color values that are output in numbers for RGB, CMYK and Co., but rather want to know RAL color codes and the color names of other color fans, you can go to Datacolor ColorReader to grab. This device measures the color of walls, fabrics and other surfaces to provide the right color combination or name for designers, interior decorators, painters and other audiences. In addition to determining the color code, the app can also be used to create color palettes and carry out quality checks.
You can find the device in different versions on the Amazon product page. There is also an indication that around 20.000 colors are recognized, which are then output in the corresponding codes from RAL, Schöner Wohnen, Sikkens, Farrow & Ball and Valspar. In addition to the standard "ColorReader" model, the "ColorReader Pro" and the "ColorReader EZ" are also offered on the linked page. Before you buy, you should read the reviews of the selected model. Because depending on the version and purpose of use, there are different opinions on the accuracy and usefulness of the devices.
