Mattress vacuums and mite vacuums: test opinion and tips

Mattress vacuums or mite vacuums are intended to vacuum the mattress and rid it of mites, mite excrement, flakes of skin, hair, lint and so on. Some mite suckers have a special feature: in addition to special nozzles and an extra setting for gentle suction, they have built in a lamp for UV light. But whether this light really kills mites has not been confirmed anywhere. That's why I leave out the vacuum cleaners with lights in the following. For this purpose, models are to be presented that have been tested by Stiftung Warentest and published in the magazine Test were presented.

Vacuum cleaner for the mattress: buy a special mite vacuum?

If you want to vacuum your mattress at home or several mattresses in your hotel, hostel or in your Airbnb apartment, then you don't necessarily need a special mite vacuum, as is marketed for allergy sufferers. Especially not one with vibration that allegedly loosens up fixed particles. You can also simply tap the mattress two or three times for this. If you then want to vacuum up mites, mite excrement, lint, flakes of skin and the like, then you proceed as follows with a vacuum cleaner:

  • Take off the regular nozzle and put on a clean nozzle without bristles or comb - a brush or comb would break the fibers and seams
  • Reduce the suction power, because too much power will wear out the mattress cover
  • Sucks not only in one direction, but from left to right, from right to left and again from top to bottom - this is how you loosen what is fixed from the fibers
  • Press only so hard that suction power is given, but you do not push the nozzle to the mattress core

Dust mite allergy

An allergy information service has been online since April 13, 2017, which was launched through the collaboration between the Helmholtz Center in Munich and the Federal Ministry of Health. You can find the portal at allergyinformationsdienst.de. Information on allergies to house dust mites is also extensively processed there.

Vacuum cleaners, which are recommended according to the test

Now we come to the Stiftung Warentest and the one in the magazine Test recommended vacuum cleaners. In the following I refer to issues 2/2016 and 5/2016. In the first-mentioned booklet, cordless battery vacuum cleaners in particular were tested. However, these were not convincing and would certainly only suck up small amounts of the actual proportion of mites, dust, hair, etc. on one mattress or even on several mattresses one after the other. So nonsense for allergy sufferers. Only the Miele Swing H1 Ecoline Plus was able to achieve a grade of 2,6 as satisfactory.

So let's take a look at the corded vacuum cleaners from the second booklet. Regardless of whether you are allergic or not, mattresses or floors: the vacuum cleaner should clean properly. Let's see which vacuum cleaners would also be suitable as mite vacuum cleaners - in the fifth issue of last year, Test focused on vacuum cleaners with different nozzles:

Vacuum cleaner Nozzles / features Test grade Price (June 2017) Buy it at Amazon
Siemens Z 7.0 VSZ7330 Upholstery nozzle, AllergyPlus filter for allergy sufferers Good (1,8) - Very good fiber absorption by upholstery 149 Euros here
Miele Complete C3 SGSH1 Three additional nozzles, AirClean Plus filter Good (2,1) - Good uptake of fibers 239 Euros here

Basically there are only two vacuum cleaners that, according to the test, would also be suitable as mite vacuums. Because in third place with a grade of 2,2 was the Fakir Prestige 2105, but this does not have a suitable nozzle for vacuuming upholstery, especially for the mattress.

Buy mite vacuums: Order mattress vacuums from Amazon

There is no real test from Stiftung Warentest for mattress vacuums or mattress vacuum cleaners, which also remove mites and flakes of skin for allergy sufferers. But there are bestseller lists for mattress vacuums and mite vacuums on Amazon. Usually these are hand-held vacuum cleaners. If you can find a handheld vacuum cleaner in the following overviews, make sure that it is cord-operated. As already mentioned above: Cordless vacuum cleaners are no good.

First of all, the bestseller list for mattress vacuums:

My solution: A new attachment for my Dyson V8 Absolute

I had to deal with the topic of mattress and mite vacuums myself for a few weeks and was about to buy an explicit mattress vacuum when I had the idea that I could take my Dyson V8 Absolute cordless vacuum. It doesn't have any UV light to kill mites, but according to a test report by Stiftung Warentest, it is so good at vacuuming that it even made it into the top 3 for wired cylinder vacuum cleaners.

The only reason why you might not want to vacuum your bed with the Dyson is the fact that I occasionally use the device to vacuum the doormat in front of the front door, on which my cats like to have their dinner (half mice or the like) lay down. That's too unhygienic for me.

If you treat the Dyson V8 Absolute with a replacement turbo brush just for the bed, you have a very powerful mattress vacuum (Photo: Sir Apfelot).

The idea then occurred to me that I might just buy a new brush attachment and then only use it for the bed or the mattresses from now on. This is good for hygiene and I don't need a completely new vacuum cleaner. The Dyson V8 Absolute works with a turbo brush that really pulls out a lot of dirt. When I sucked for the first time, I was both fascinated and shocked by what was being revealed.

Incredible, but true: Everything you see in the Dyson's container was only taken from a double bed (Photos: Sir Apfelot).

On the photo you can see the result that came out of vacuuming the duvet covers and the mattress. The container was previously empty. I vacuum the bed again and again every 3 to 4 weeks and there is always as much house dust in the container as you can see in the photo. That reinforces the news I heard recently: Humans are the greatest source of dust in the household.

A pile of house dust: I can explain the cat hair, but I didn't expect the amount of dust.

If you are just looking for a good cordless vacuum cleaner and are ready to dig a little deeper into your pocket for quality, you should get the Dyson V8 Absolute and the linked below, electric replacement brush. With this team you can really declare war on the house dust mites and their legacy sheep. The linked replacement brush also fits on the even more expensive Dyson V10 and V11 Absolute.

Summary of the topic

Do you need a special mattress vacuum or mite vacuum in the household? Not really. The hand vacuum cleaners, which are marketed for mattresses and against mites, can, however, enable you to work faster, for example if you are looking for a mattress vacuum for the hotel or your B&B. It is questionable whether the UV light of some teats is really beneficial for allergy sufferers. In a test by Stiftung Warentest, I read that you would have to drive back and forth in one place for minutes so that the UV light would kill a significant proportion of the mites. Nobody does that when vacuuming.

In case of doubt, a canister vacuum cleaner with a clean replacement nozzle and an adjustable output can be sufficient for individual mattresses and vacuuming from time to time. The Dyson V8 I mentioned has a “weaker” suction level that is perfect for duvet covers. These are not drawn in, but the electrically operated turbo brush still gets a lot of dust (and certainly dust mites too!) out of the beds.
