Chapter in this post:
Factory resetting your iPhone may be necessary if you want to sell it or give it away - or if a bug can be fixed with it. But what steps have to be taken to reset the Apple smartphone? Here you will find detailed instructions for all possible models. So you can reset the iPhone 5 (Pro / Pro Max) to factory settings without much effort from the iPhone 6 and 7 to the iPhone 8 and 11 as well as X, XR and XS to the current models. In the following you will find all the information on how to proceed with and without Mac, PC, Finder and iTunes.
If you have a Mac with macOS or a PC with Windows at hand, you can use it to reset the iPhone. This has the advantage that you can make a backup beforehand, which can then be transferred to the same for the quick setup of an iPhone. On the PC as well as on the Mac up to macOS 10.14 Mojave you use iTunes (in the most current version possible); under macOS 10.15 Catalina the Finder. That's how it works:

Resetting the iPhone to factory settings without a computer is of course also possible. Here you can differentiate between iPhones with a home button (up to iPhone 8) and without a home button (from iPhone X, currently iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max). Below you will find both options as short step-by-step lists.
Tip: Before taking the measures outlined, it is of course also worth making a backup on the computer or via the iCloud. This means that the data is retained and can be transferred to the newly set up or to another Apple smartphone. You can also carry out most of the measures shown on the iPad or iPod Touch.
