On Mac and PC: reset iPhone to factory settings

If you have a Mac with macOS or a PC with Windows at hand, you can use it to reset the iPhone. This has the advantage that you can make a backup beforehand, which can then be transferred to the same for the quick setup of an iPhone. On the PC as well as on the Mac up to macOS 10.14 Mojave you use iTunes (in the most current version possible); under macOS 10.15 Catalina the Finder. That's how it works:

  1. Open the iTunes app or the Finder (Catalina) on the computer
  2. Connect the iPhone to the computer (USB to Lightning cable)
  3. If “Trust this computer?” Or a code is asked, follow the instructions on the screen
  4. Select the iPhone you want to reset from the device list
  5. A possible intermediate step, if not already done: log out of the "Where is?" Feature
  6. Click on "Restore iPhone ..."
  7. In the dialog window that appears, click on "Restore"
  8. Now all data and settings will be deleted and iOS will be installed again
  9. The iPhone then restarts, cleared of private data as it was at the factory
  10. A new setup by you or the new owner is now possible

Hard reset: Resetting the iPhone with and without the home button

Resetting the iPhone to factory settings without a computer is of course also possible. Here you can differentiate between iPhones with a home button (up to iPhone 8) and without a home button (from iPhone X, currently iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max). Below you will find both options as short step-by-step lists.

Hard reset with Home + Power / Sleep

  1. Press and hold the home button and the power / sleep button (top or right) at the same time
  2. Only let go when the restart process of the iPhone starts
  3. The hard reset was successful if the Apple logo is displayed and the device can then be set up again

Hard reset via the iOS menu

  1. Open the "Settings" on your device
  2. Select the item "General" from the list
  3. Scroll down and tap "Reset"
  4. Then type "Erase all content and settings"
  5. Confirm your entry again so that the device is cleaned up
The iPhone hard reset can be implemented via the iOS menu. This is particularly possible on Apple smartphones without a home button (iPhone 11, etc.).

Tip: Before taking the measures outlined, it is of course also worth making a backup on the computer or via the iCloud. This means that the data is retained and can be transferred to the newly set up or to another Apple smartphone. You can also carry out most of the measures shown on the iPad or iPod Touch.
