AirTag Developer Mode: Simple insight into the "exact search" function

If you use an Apple AirTag in combination with an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, you can use the U1 chip installed there to start the "exact search" function. This uses the ultra-broadband radio, the camera and various other techniques to locate AirTags to the centimeter. A kind of “developer mode” can be activated, which provides various technical information and makes adjustments possible. I have summarized information for you in this post.

AirTag Developer Mode in the Exact Search

To activate the developer overlay, you first have to open the "Where is?" App. There you activate the exact search for one of your AirTags. If you now tap on its name four times, a display should appear above the search animation, which provides you with various technical details, program parameters and settings. I became aware of this through one Entry at MacRumors. There one refers, among other things, to an entry on Reddit as well on this YouTube video. The one-minute video shows the overlay with its setting options, controls and the graphic implementation.
