If your Apple Mac keeps spinning, running the fan to the limit, the display freezes or the system simply crashes, this can be due to a hardware error. To find out if something is wrong with the components of the computer, you can use the Apple hardware test (AHT) or the Apple Diagnostics use. The difference lies in the timing of the introduction of the tools. You use the test on Mac models from before June 2013. If your machine was released in June 2013 or later, you use the diagnosis.
In its official instructions (see below), Apple specifies eight steps that are necessary for using the AHT tool. This includes, among other things, that the Mac is on a flat, hard, stable and well-ventilated surface. In addition, apart from the monitor, Ethernet, power supply, mouse and keyboard, no peripherals should be connected. Once that is done, the Mac must first be switched off.
Now the actual procedure begins by turning on the Mac and then immediately holding down the D key. You can let go of it when the symbol for the Apple Hardware Test is displayed. Then you choose a language, the "test" or "carry out a detailed test" (takes longer) and at the end the test results are displayed. The last step after Apple's instructions consists of restarting or switching off.
For the time being, the procedure for the Apple Diagnostic Tool is the same as for the AHT. This is how the Mac should stand, firmly and well ventilated; and apart from the mouse, keyboard, ethernet, monitor and power, nothing should be connected. If the Mac is then switched off, the necessary steps for the hardware diagnosis on the Mac, MacBook, iMac or Mac mini can be carried out.
To start again, switch it on and hold down the D button immediately. You can let go when the language selection is displayed. Immediately after selecting the language, the tool starts and a progress bar shows how long you have to wait approximately (2 to 5 minutes). Possible errors or damage are indicated with reference codes. You can use the reference code to give it to Apple Support or to google it.
