Apple Mac Calendar App: When was a calendar entry created?

Entries in Apple's calendarApp can contain a variety of information, such as event start and end time, notes and links, invitees, video call shortcuts, attachments, and more. But what is not immediately apparent when dealing with a calendar entry on a day-to-day basis: When was the calendar entry created? And can you find out on the Apple Mac? Yes, you can! However, this requires a few more steps or clicks than the traditional interactions with the calendar. In this guide you will learn how to find out the date and time at which a calendar entry was made.

Find out on Mac when a calendar entry was created

Please take a few minutes to follow the instructions below and complete each step. Because you cannot simply use a right-click or a keyboard shortcut to query the creation time of an appointment in the Mac calendar. Instead, you extract the iCal entry as a file and then search through it - and you do this as follows:

  1. Opens the Calendar app on the Apple Mac
  2. Use the mouse to drag the entry in question onto the desktop or into a folder
  3. Right-click on the created .ics file to open its context menu
  4. Move the mouse cursor to "Open With" and click on "TextEdit" in the app list
  5. Find the line that begins with "CREATED:" in the text document that opens
First, you drag the calendar entry onto the desktop or into a folder to create an iCal (.ics) file from it.

Next, you open the created file in TextEdit or another app that can display files in their plain text form.

This is what the CREATED line of an .isc file tells you when it was created

In the TEST EVENT file shown above, after "CREATED:" which means "created", you will find this string: 20230224T083849Z. This can be read as year, month, day, hours, minutes and seconds. You can use the .isc file of an appointment to find out exactly when it was entered as an iCal entry. The other lines also reveal other information. "LAST-MODIFIED:" shows e.g. B. when the entry was last edited.

There is a lot of different information in the file. To find out when an appointment was created in the calendar app, all you need to do is look at the CREATED line - and possibly at the other lines that are not blurred.

According to the information in the iCal file, the entry for testing the procedure described above was created on February 24, 2023, at 8:38 a.m. (and 49 seconds). But that's only half true, because the time is given for the UTC or GMT time zone. Here in Germany or Central Europe, an hour must be added. This results in this creation time of the calendar entry: February 24, 2023, at 9:38:48 am. I hope this has been of some help to you. Have fun trying!
