Apple September Keynote 2021: iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7 & new iPad models

Today, September 14, 2021, Apple's traditional September keynote began at 19:00 p.m. local time. This time the iPhone was there again, which shows that the tech giant from Cupertino is coping better with the Covid 19 pandemic this year than in 2020. A new model of the Apple Watch was also presented. Contrary to all expectations, the third product segment was not the new AirPods 3, but something new from the tablet sector. With the new iPad and the new iPad mini there is now more power, connectivity and possibilities. You can find all the details in this one Apple September 2021 Keynote Summary.

Here you will find the summary of the Apple September Keynote 2021 from September 14.09.2021th, 7 with information on Apple tv +, Apple Fitness +, iPad, iPad mini, Apple Watch Series 13, iPhone 13 (mini) and iPhone XNUMX Pro (Max). There will be detailed articles on the individual new products tomorrow.

California Streaming and Opening by Tim Cook

The titles of the individual Apple Special Events always pose a little riddle. Sometimes they refer to specific products or features. This time, however, the US state of California was highlighted for no specific reason. The title of the Apple September Keynote 2021 was "California Streaming". The topic "California" then carried through the stream, as this z. B. opened with a musical performance, during which the interpreters were shown in different landscapes from the desert to the coast. Due to the many tracking shots and aerial shots, I almost hoped that Apple would spontaneously introduce a camera drone.

After Tim Cook spoke the first words and also moderated again and again between the subject areas and the presenter during the performance, the picture flew from one location to the next. This time (like last autumn, this spring or at WWDC21) they were no longer limited to Apple Park and its buildings, but the presentations and lectures were spread across various locations in California. From an open-air stage over a cliff on the coast to a drive-in cinema, everything was there. I didn't quite understand why California was highlighted like this, but at least it was a nice change in the design of the keynote.

Focus on Apple tv + and Apple Fitness +

The first topic of the evening was not a new device, but the streaming service Apple tv +. It was highlighted by Tim Cook that the shows and films on offer have garnered over 500 award nominations to date. More than 130 prizes could also be won. Reference was also made to new series, films and seasons - for example the second season of The Morning Show, but also Foundation, The Problem with John Steward, Invasion, Swagger, Finch and The Shrink Next Door.

After the new Apple Watch Series 7 was presented (see below) it was all about Apple Fitness +, the training service for everyone with an Apple Watch and devices for streaming. I prefer the information here to summarize the services. In addition to new content for Pilates, guided meditations, ski and snowboard training and walk audios, there is good news for everyone who wants to use Fitness+ in this country too: the service is coming to Europe and thus also to Germany, Austria and Switzerland . A total of 21 countries will be able to access it later this fall. The trainings are in English, but with appropriate subtitles.

iPad (9rd generation)

The first device discussed this evening was the 9th generation Apple iPad. This gets the A13 Bionic chip as SoC and is therefore 20% faster in all areas. This closes the processor (CPU), the graphics (GPU) and the Neural Engine. This makes the new iPad up to three times faster than the best-selling Chromebook. In addition to the faster chip, there is now a 12 MP ultrawide camera above the display. The wide-angle camera has a field of view of 122° and is compatible with Center Stage (previously only in the iPad Pro). This means that people automatically remain centered and the image enlarges as other people enter the field of view.

Center Stage can not only be used in FaceTime, but also in many other apps for video telephony or video recording. The feature should even be compatible with TikTok. A True Tone display is used for the beautiful reproduction of image content. Thanks to iPadOS 15, many new functions are also possible on the tablet: widgets in the app overview, better multitasking, quick notes, and so on. In addition to the Smart Keyboard and third-party keyboards, the new 9th Gen iPad is also compatible with the Apple Pencil 1.

The new iPad can now be pre-ordered with 64GB from 379 euros or with 256GB from 549 euros. The tablet from Cupertino will be delivered and available in stores on September 24th, 2021. As always, it should be noted that the price also depends on whether only WiFi or mobile communications are to be supported. You can find all details, ordering options and prices in the Apple online store.

iPad mini (6th generation)

The iPad mini is in a "class of its own", which was demonstrated during the presentation of the new generation, among other things, based on its use by pilots or doctors. The new Apple iPad mini of the 6th generation has been redesigned, now has an edge-to-edge display and Touch ID has been integrated into the button on the top. With the same housing size as its predecessor, the display now measures 8,3 inches diagonally. In terms of performance, there is a 40% increase in the CPU, 80% in the graphics and a neural engine that is twice as fast. Not only 5G and Wi-Fi 6 are available for broad connectivity ...

... but also USB-C! This means that the iPad mini can now also be used with numerous peripheral devices that have a USB-C connector. A mobile butterfly ultrasound device was named and shown as an example. In addition to the 12 MP FaceTime camera, which also has a 122 ° field of view and center stage, there is also an innovation for the camera on the back. This also has 12 MP, an f / 1.8 aperture and a true-tone flash. Video recordings in 4K are now also possible with the new mini-format tablet.

And that's not all: the Apple Pencil 2 can now also be used with the small Apple tablet. There is even a magnetic holder for the stylus on the edge of the iPad mini, where it can be charged. There will also be new folios as holders and keyboard for the tablet and the pen. You can pre-order now (from 549 euros), and the device will be available from next week.

Apple Watch Series 7

The updated smartwatch from Apple not only has a larger display, but also new features for cycling training. Not only starts and breaks in cycling are now automatically registered, but also falls. "Fall Detection", which is also available for everyday use, has been expanded accordingly to include cycling. In addition, there is now support for the use of eBikes, since the motor support has to correct the calorie consumption downwards.

Incidentally, two big rumors about the Apple Watch Series 7 have not come true: the design was not adapted to the flat side surfaces of the iPhone and iPad. On the contrary, everything was made even softer and rounder. There were also no new case sizes. The 20% larger display results from a reduction in the edges around the mini-screen. Update 15.09.2021/41/45: According to the press release, the case is bigger: there is now a XNUMX mm and a XNUMX mm version. That was just not addressed directly in the keynote. Update end. App displays, overviews and buttons are now larger with the same housing. I think that older users in particular should be addressed here.

In addition to the larger display, on which more content can be shown for text messages, for example, there are also new features for text input. A virtual keyboard can be used to enter messages, search terms and the like. Again to the hardware: this has an IP6X certification against dust and a WR50 water resistance. On the battery side, it stays at 18 hours. However, you can charge the battery up to 33% faster - from 45% to 0% in 85 minutes.

In the US, the Series 3 is now available from $ 199, the SE from $ 279 and the new Series 7 from $ 399. There's no release date yet, all that has been said is that the Apple Watch Series 7 will be released later in the fall of 2021. Accordingly, I cannot yet find any order or purchase options on the Apple website and the official press release does not yet provide any prices. Maybe tomorrow, when I look at each device in an article.

iPhone 13 (mini)

Now let's get to what everyone was expecting from tonight: the new iPhone models. First, the new iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini were presented in this area. These are again IP68 water and dust resistant and have a ceramic shield screen protector. The rumor about the narrower notch has been confirmed, it is 20% narrower. The Super Retina XDR display is 28% brighter but more efficient, which saves battery life. Speaking of better use of the battery: of course, a new chip is built in, the A15 Bionic.

The new A15 Bionic SoC from Apple is based on a 5 nm architecture and thus has almost 15 billion smallest transistors. The 6-core CPU consists of 2 high-performance and 4 efficiency cores. The graphics unit has four cores and the Neural Engine has 16 cores and enough capacity to perform 15,8 trillion calculations per second. There is a new system for the display and video processing that uses redesigned encoders and decoders.

But now the most important thing: the cameras. A dual camera system is used on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Thanks to new technology, 47% more light is recorded for significantly less image noise in dark conditions. The "Sensor Shift" stabilization is now also available in these models. The camera also has a "cinematic mode" to switch the focus between the foreground and background. This can be done either automatically or manually.

More radio bands and new partners are supported for 5G, which increases availability worldwide. Larger batteries allow 1,5 hours (iPhone 13 mini) or 2,5 hours (iPhone 13) longer runtimes per battery charge. MagSafe will also be there again, for which there will also be a new wallet that supports the "Where is?" Function. So you don't have to combine a wallet with an AirTag. The screen sizes have remained the same: the iPhone 13 mini has a 5,4 inch display, the iPhone 13 a 6,1 inch display. The new “small” iPhones are available with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB from 799 euros and 899 euros, respectively.

iPhone 13 Pro (Max)

We come to the last two devices that were presented at Apple's September Keynote 2021: the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here, too, the notch on the display has been made 20% narrower. The Ceramic Shield is used above the display and there is an IP68 certification for protection against water and dust. Inside there was a major redesign, e.g. B. to install a larger battery. The iPhone 13 Pro should now run 12 hours longer than the 1,5 Pro; the iPhone 13 Pro Max compared to the 12 Pro Max a full 2,5 hours more.

Unlike the smaller models, the A15 Bionic SoC is a bit more powerful here: instead of four, it has five GPU cores in the Pro models. The aim is to achieve the best and fastest graphics in a smartphone. Speaking of which: the rumors about the 120 Hz display have come true. Thanks to ProMotion, the Hertz number is dynamically adjusted, depending on the usage and the image content that is displayed. When the app content, photos or texts are idle, the image repetition drops to 10 Hz, which saves electricity.

All three cameras on the back of the devices have been redesigned. They can not only be used for video recording with the new "Cinematic Mode". This also means that the focus can be adjusted while editing the video files. Similar to the way the bokeh effect on photos has been able to be adjusted retrospectively for several iPhone generations, this is now also possible for videos. These can also be recorded in ProRes with 4K resolution and 30 frames per second. New styles are available for photography, i.e. color schemes and color adjustments - directly in the camera app.

The display sizes of 6,1 inches diagonal for the iPhone 13 Pro and 6,7 inches for the iPhone 13 Pro Max have remained the same as for the 12 series from the previous year. But there is still one enlargement: the Rumors about the larger storage space have been confirmed. There is no longer a 64GB version, but a 128TB version in addition to 256GB, 512GB and 1GB. The iPhone 13 Pro is available from € 1.149 and the iPhone 13 Pro Max from € 1.249. The smartphones can be pre-ordered from September 17th, they will be available from September 24th.

  1. Nice summary, thank you for that.
Regarding the focal length: even if Apple itself speaks of it as if it were like this ... you are referring to a focal length converted to a small image. The real ones, and only these are relevant for the depth of field and other image properties, tend to be in the 3 (UW), 6 (WW) and 12mm (telephoto) range.
