Detachable and reattachable Apple Watch protective glass

I go rock climbing occasionally and have never taken off my Apple Watch for the occasion. Despite my caution, I have occasionally gotten stuck on a climbing hold during a movement and have given the Apple Watch a hit - fortunately without consequences so far.

I've temporarily put bulletproof glass on the display, but I gave it up for two reasons:

  1. For me, every glass seems like a foreign body on the watch.
  2. There are no reasonable armored glasses that effectively protect the rounded edges of the display.

And overall, I couldn't get used to having a protective glass on my Apple Watch all the time, even though I don't need it most of the time.

I go rock climbing maybe once a week and do the occasional gardening that is really a display hazard. Otherwise my activities are relatively harmless for the Apple Watch.

The solution: protection that can be removed

I'm looking for a protective cover like the one you know from the iPhone clip-on cover from the company LK encountered This consists of a clear protective glass (not sure if it's glass) surrounded by a frame, which in my case is black plastic.

The practical thing about this Apple Watch protector is that you can attach it without removing the watch or even detaching the bracelet from the watch.

This means that you can clip the protection onto the watch in a few seconds before exercising and then remove it again afterwards. Simply the perfect solution for me, because I don't really want permanent protection, but I can protect the Apple Watch from damage all around if necessary.

And I like the quick attachment and detachment so much that I use the protective cover for the Pick of the week free.

Beware of dust and grains of sand

However, the protective cover still poses a small risk, because if dust or small grains of sand get lost on the inside, there is a risk that they will be between the protective glass and the display glass when you put them on the watch and scratch the display.

To prevent this, the screen protector always ends up in the small bag that came with the product to protect it during transport.

Operation in the swimming pool not possible

I haven't tried it, but the manufacturer noted that while you can take the Apple Watch into the water with the case on, it won't work even if you're out of the water again because of the water between the protective glass and the display collects.

Due to the water in the gap, the touch controls no longer work properly, but this can be quickly remedied by removing the protective cover and drying the display glass.

The watch with the protective case is not as pretty as before, but the protective function is definitely good.

Removable protective cases for the watch

In recent years, innovative technologies have driven the development of protective glasses. Some models have special coatings that not only protect against scratches, but also improve visibility in direct sunlight and increase grease repellency. These technologies can make a difference in how you use your watch in everyday life, improving readability and reducing the need to constantly clean the display.

No matter what type of protective glass you choose, it's important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each material and technology in order to make a choice that suits your needs and lifestyle.

Instructions for correct application and removal

Attaching and removing a protective glass may seem simple at first glance, but there are some tricks and tips that make the process easier and ensure that your display is optimally protected.

Step-by-step instructions for installation

  1. Preparation: Before you attach the protective glass, it is important to clean the display of your Apple Watch thoroughly. Use a microfiber cloth and, if available, a special display cleaner to remove grease and dust.
  2. Positioning: Carefully remove the protective glass from the packaging and hold it by the edges to avoid fingerprints on the adhesive side. Align it over the display before hanging it up. Some manufacturers provide an auxiliary template to make this step easier.
  3. Attach: Place the protective glass slowly on the display, starting from one edge. Make sure it is aligned exactly. If it doesn't fit perfectly, you can carefully lift it and reposition it.
  4. Remove air bubbles: If air bubbles form under the protective glass, you can usually press them out with a soft card or the edge of a microfiber cloth. Start in the middle and work your way outwards.

Instructions for removing the protective glass

  • Be careful when removing: Use a soft plastic spatula or your fingernails to gently lift the protective glass at one corner. Avoid using sharp objects as they can damage the display or protective glass.
  • Cleaning after removal: After the protective glass has been removed, you should clean the display again to remove any residue. This is also a good time to clean the protective glass itself if you plan to reuse it.

Tips for the care and maintenance of the protective glass

A removable protective glass for your Apple Watch is not only a means of protecting the display, but also an accessory that requires care and attention to maintain its protection and clarity over time.

Here are some tips to ensure your protective glass stays in top condition for as long as possible:

Cleaning the protective glass

  • Regular cleaning: Fingerprints, sweat and dust can accumulate on the protective glass and reduce visibility. Clean the protective glass regularly with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, you can use a little water or a cleaner specifically designed for displays.
  • Avoid harsh cleaning agents: Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or alcohol on the protective glass, as these can damage the surface or dissolve the special coatings.

Storage of the protective glass

  • Protection when not in use: If you won't be using the protective glass for a while, perhaps because you want to wear your Apple Watch without additional protection, store the protective glass in a safe place. A soft case or bag can prevent scratches on the surface.
  • Avoiding extreme temperatures: Storage in extreme temperatures or direct sunlight may deform or damage the protective glass. Store it in a moderate temperature environment.

Why some users forego protective glass

While protective glasses undoubtedly provide an additional layer of security for the Apple Watch, some users consciously choose not to use them. The reasons for this are varied and are often related to personal preferences, the usage environment or aesthetic considerations. Below are some of the most common reasons why someone might not want a protective glass on their Apple Watch:

Aesthetics and design

  • Preserve original design: Many people appreciate the high-quality design of the Apple Watch and want it to remain as true to the original as possible. A protective glass can change the appearance and make the watch appear less elegant.
  • Feel and touch sensitivity: Some users report that protective glasses can change the feeling of touching the display. They prefer the direct feel of the original glass screen in order to maintain optimal touch sensitivity.

Trust in robustness

  • Confidence in the quality of the materials: Apple uses high-quality materials for the Apple Watch, including Ion-X glass for the aluminum models and sapphire crystal for the stainless steel and titanium models. Some users trust the durability of these materials and see no need for additional protection.
  • Careful handling: Users who generally treat their devices very carefully and minimize risks such as drops or strong impacts may feel that a protective glass is an unnecessary precaution.

Comfort and weight

  • comfort: A protective glass can slightly increase the weight of the watch and change the wearing experience. For users who place great value on comfort, this may be a reason to forego additional protection.
  • heat dissipation: Although rarely discussed, a protective glass can theoretically influence the heat dissipation of the device, which could lead to heating during intensive use.

Costs and maintenance

  • Additional costs: For some, purchasing protective glass may seem like an unnecessary additional expense, especially if they consider the risk of damage to be low.
  • maintenance: Installing and replacing protective lenses can seem cumbersome, especially when it needs to be done regularly to maintain clarity and functionality.

Each of these reasons reflects a personal decision based on individual priorities and how Apple Watch is used. Ultimately, it is a question of personal balancing between the need for protection and the desire to enjoy the device in its original condition.
