LAN cable extension - the bestsellers from Cat.5 to Cat.6

If you have to travel longer with one Network cable (LAN cable) would like to bridge, there are basically three options:

  1. A coupling is used that connects two LAN plugs (RJ45). This is how you make a long one on two short cables.
  2. A LAN extension cable is used that has a network socket on one side and a network socket on the other RJ45 connector hat.
  3. You do without unnecessary plug connections and buy a network cable with the right length.

Disadvantages of the LAN coupling compared to the extension cable

The first mentioned way works with a coupling for patch cables. These have a socket for network cables on both sides and thus enable two cables to be connected in order to bridge longer distances than would be possible with a single cable.

The disadvantage of such a coupling compared to a real LAN extension cable or a long LAN cable is that you have more plug connections and thus more potential sources of error. For this reason, a long cable is actually always the best way to go. This is followed by the extension cable and finally I would choose the option with a coupling.

I have two separate articles in which I write the best sellers for LAN cable with 10 meters and for LAN cable with 20 meters with Cat5 and Cat6 standards.

Best seller: LAN coupling with RJ45 sockets

Even if I would not recommend it, I will still list the bestsellers of the LAN coupling for you. I have concentrated on those that meet the Cat6 standard so that they are shielded as well as possible.

LAN extension cable - only for short distances

The Ethernet extension cables are not available in particularly long lengths. The offers mostly cover lengths of 1 to 5 meters.

Long LAN cables

If you really want to cover long distances, you should use a long LAN cable and forego an extension in favor of the transmission quality. Important, these are "normal" network cables that have a plug on both sides (no socket on one side!).

You can find the links to the offers with different lengths here. You should use Cat6 or Cat7 cables if possible, as these are better shielded than the (often cheaper) Cat5 cables:
