I know it mainly from the Apple TV, which can be connected to the stereo system or a receiver using such a cable. Here it is even absolutely necessary, since the Apple TV does not have an analog cinch output. So I used the Toslink cable to connect a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) to the Apple TVwhich in turn has an output for my stereo system.
