If you want to retrofit a ceiling fan in a room, you often have the problem that you have to bring a new power cable to the point in the ceiling where the fan is to be installed. Ceiling fans with lights - their advantages and disadvantages

Ceiling fans with a light function combine the lighting with the air conditioning of the room in one device. A single power connection in the ceiling is sufficient for the connection - the laying of a separate cable is therefore superfluous. It is important for ceiling fans with lights that their bulbs can be easily replaced because their service life is limited. Some of the fans are equipped with standard lamps, in other cases a complete module has to be replaced. Ceiling fans with light offer a lot of comfort if they can be controlled with a remote control and also have a timer.

Combining the fan with the lighting is a good idea if you don't want to completely redo the power wiring.

Why are ceiling fans with lights so popular?

If you want to install a ceiling fan, you will first notice that there is exactly one power cable in the ceiling at the right place: this is actually intended for the ceiling light. Some people then decide to do without the ceiling lamp altogether in favor of the ceiling fan and to realize the lighting using floor lamps and wall lamps. But that can be unsatisfactory, because light from above illuminates the room better. This is where the ceiling fan with light comes into play. As a 2-in-1 device, it proves incredibly beneficial.

The problem of replacing the lamps has become much smaller since the use of LEDs. These not only save a lot of electricity, they also last much longer than conventional light sources. However, some manufacturers of cheaper ceiling fans with lights rely on permanently installed LEDs. These are difficult to swap out. The producer then assumes that the LED will last (almost) as long as the fan itself. However, these cases are rather rare. In most cases, either LEDs with standard sockets (often: E27) can be exchanged very easily, or, as described, the somewhat more complicated module exchange is necessary.

Dimmable light on the ceiling fan

Everyone who has ever had dimmable lamps appreciates the stepless dimmability of light. Of course, these are also available for ceiling fans with lights. However, not all models are equipped in this way. Usually only higher quality remote controlled ceiling fans have this option (if at all). If you do some work, you can also convert the non-dimmable ceiling fan of your choice into a dimmable device. If its light source is replaceable, a dimmable lamp should be integrated into the fan, which is then adjusted to the desired light intensity with an external dimmer. There are also smart home solutions for this. This brings us to the next topic:

Ceiling fans with replaceable light sources can be equipped with smart home lamps, which they integrate into the existing smart home system. Set iPhone reminders to enter or exit a location
On the Apple iPhone you can use the Reminders app to be reminded of things under certain preset circumstances. For example, you can set each notification for a specific date and even for an exact time. You can set a reminder to “go shopping” when you leave work or “call contact xyz” when you arrive at home so that you don’t forget anything. Here I show you how it works.
If you want to be reminded of something based on location, you can use the reminders on the iPhone and have individual entries triggered when you enter or leave a location.

Set iPhone reminder upon arrival or departure
Setting reminders for arriving at a certain location or leaving an area is actually pretty easy. And once you've made the settings, it's easy to do when you set it up again. To set up a location-based iPhone reminder, simply follow these step-by-step instructions:
1. Selects a list (or creates one to select)
2. Create a new reminder in the list and give it a title
3. Tap the circled "i" to the right of the new reminder
4. Now activate the "Location" slider and select the location or an address below
5. Then tap the circled "i" underneath
6. You can then select a location again or search for an address
7. Once you have set a location, a map will appear below
8. Select "Arrival" or "On Departure" above the map
9. With the dot on the blue circle on the map you can increase and decrease the radius
10. If you tap on "Details" in the top left and the arrow back, you get back to the list with the reminder, which now shows the note that has been set
The addresses and maps are of course displayed normally when used. I pixelated them on the screenshots just for privacy. As you can see, "Arrival" or "On Departure" can be selected above the map. Correspondingly, the circle is drawn around an area colored blue (arriving in the colored region) or the area around the circle colored blue (leaving the place and entering the colored region).
Allow the Reminders app to get the location
Of course, the whole thing only works if the Reminders app on the iPhone knows the current location. You can see whether this is the case in the settings of your Apple smartphone. To turn on the location service for the memories, follow these steps:

iPad won't show keyboard - here are the solutions
Today I got a request from a relative with some photos of an iPad with Safari open. At first I wasn't sure what it was about, but then the next message came:
The iPad no longer shows me a keyboard.
I admit that I haven't had the problem yet, but a call to the appropriate Apple support page gave me two possible causes and solutions. For those who don't want to read a lot: A restart solved the problem in our case and the iPad redisplayed the keyboard.

1. The iPad needs a restart
In the first case I couldn't find a real cause. It seems that the iPad sometimes freezes and just forgets to show the keyboard. This was the case for many users in the Apple forum after they installed an iOS or iPadOS update. In my case, however, it was a brand new iPad 10 with iPadOS 16.3.1 - not a version that you would expect to have teething problems. Still, the restart helped for us. Here's a quick jaunt on how to restart iPad because I had to look it up myself:
- iPad without home button (all current models) → Press and hold the top button and one of the volume buttons at the same time, then drag the slider.
- iPad with home button → Hold the top button and then move the slider.

2. A real keyboard or mouse is connected to the iPad
If an iPad doesn't show an onscreen keyboard, it could also be because a Bluetooth keyboard was connected at some point and automatically reconnected to the iPad because it was nearby. According to one user, after pairing a Logitech mouse with the iPad, the onscreen keyboard stopped appearing on them. You can quickly check whether this is the reason by going to the control center Turn off the Bluetooth temporarily and see if a keyboard is now displayed on a text input window.
Here you can see where the Bluetooth connection is deactivated in the control center. If Bluetooth is not activated and the on-screen keyboard still does not appear, then it is definitely not a Bluetooth keyboard.
If you want to unpair a connected keyboard from the iPad, you can do this under Settings → Bluetooth.

Remap game controllers to Mac, iPad, Apple TV and iPhone
Did you know that since the current Apple operating systems, you no longer need an additional app to remap game controllers or gamepads? So if you want to change the button assignment on a controller, you can do it directly in the settings of Mac, iPad, Apple TV and iPhone. I myself was only reminded of this again today – while researching the 8BitDo controllers for Apple devices. The new settings in macOS, iPadOS, tvOS and iOS make apps like Joystick mapper obsolete, right? I tried it out for you on the Mac and on the iPhone to see if this is the case. Since the operating systems for iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple TV released in 2022, you can remap the buttons of gaming controllers on these devices without additional software.

Remap controller buttons on Apple Mac
If you want to remap the buttons, sticks and knobs of a gamepad on the Apple Mac, then the computer must have the operating system macOS 13 Adventure (or newer) installed. In order to define a new controller key assignment in the settings, you must first pair the game controller, i.e. connect it via Bluetooth or connect it by cable. Only then does the required menu item appear. And you can find it like this:
1. Click on the top left of the menu bar Apple logo ()

4. Select the gamepad you want to remap
5. Under the "Profiles" overview, click the plus icon (+)
Once you have reached the settings window described and shown, you can give the new profile a name, e.g. B. "Xbox layout", "PlayStation layout", "Settings for child 1", "Settings for app xyz" or similar. Next, the strength of the haptic feedback (vibration or rumble) can be set. In the list below you can now select new assignments for the individual knobs, keys and sticks. Once all the input options have been reassigned to your liking, click on the blue Done button. The new profile is then in the "Profiles" list. To assign this profile to the controller, click on its entry in the "Controller" list. Next to "Use profile" you can now select the created profile. Note that "All Games" is selected on the left by default. If the new assignment should only apply to a specific app, click on the plus symbol (+) below and add it. Select them, and only then determine the profile.
Do the new settings replace the old mapping apps?
The new remapping settings starting with macOS Ventura can use apps like Joystick mapper or other currently not substitute. Because these Apps are able to add mouse and keyboard capabilities to the controllers as well. Whether double-clicking, scrolling, copying, pasting or key combinations to trigger automations - this can currently only be placed on the buttons and other input options of game controllers with third-party solutions. In the macOS settings, only the gamepad functions can be rearranged, but no new ones can be added. However, this is sufficient for swapping the A and B buttons.
Gamepad remapping on Apple iPhone
In order to be able to reassign the buttons, keys and sticks of the gaming controller on the Apple iPhone, the smartphone must be iOS 16 (or newer). Again, the controller must first be paired via Bluetooth before you can remap the buttons. Depending on the device If this works differently, look at the operating instructions. If you have successfully connected the gamepad and iPhone via Bluetooth, then go to these settings:
1. Opens the Settings on your Apple iPhone
2. Type the point General an
3. Then select the point Game controller from
4. Tap under the "Profiles" overview Add profile
5. Tap on the individual points to reassign them
To use the newly created and saved profile, go back to the game controller overview (point 3 of the list). Then tap the controller for which you want to select a different profile. In its settings, tap on “Default Settings” to choose a different profile instead. To set this only for a specific game, you can also set this in the controller settings.
Remap game controllers on Apple iPad
As of iPadOS 16, the settings on the iPad are the same as the iOS settings on the iPhone described above. So you can use that as a guide.
Rearrange gamepad buttons on Apple TV
At least tvOS 16 must be installed in order to be able to equip a controller paired via Bluetooth with the Apple TV with new button assignments. If this is the case and the gamepad has been successfully paired, then proceed as follows:
- Opens the Settings on your Apple TV
- Pick the point General from
- Then open the submenu Remote controls and devices
- Choose in it again Bluetooth from
- Now select the controller and set a new key sorting
Which controllers are compatible with Apple devices?
A wide variety of Bluetooth controllers can now be used with the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. In the support document HT210414 Apple only names Xbox and PlayStation models, but you can also use "another Bluetooth game controller". The accessories manufacturer 8BitDo has announced that some of the gaming controllers on offer are now also compatible with Apple systems. If you want to use the models mentioned for gaming or for other purposes on Apple devices, you must update them to the latest version of the respective operating system. Because only the latest OS versions are currently supported:
- Apple Mac: macOS 13.2 and newer
- Apple iPhone: iOS 16.3 and newer
- Apple iPad: iPadOS 16.3 and newer
- Apple TV: tvOS 16.3 and later
How can you pair an 8BitDo gamepad with Mac, iPhone and Co.?
Pairing via Bluetooth is currently supported as a wireless connection. To do this, the mode switch on some gamepads must be set to the “D” position. On other controllers, you have to press a specific key or combination of keys. There are illustrated instructions for each process on the manufacturer's website linked above. Is it also possible to connect the 8BitDo controller via USB cable?
The cable connection is only possible with devices that have a USB-C connection. This includes current Mac and iPad models. Currently sold versions of iPhone and Apple TV are not included. In addition, the "SN30 Pro for Android" game controller cannot currently be used with Apple devices via cable (but can be used via Bluetooth).
How many 8BitDo gamepads can you connect to an Apple device?
Up to four game controllers can be paired and used simultaneously for multiplayer games.
Which games are currently supported?
All games from the App Store and games from the Apple Arcade subscription, the MFI-Controller support. (I can imagine that 8BitDo states this for legal reasons, because games and programs from other sources will certainly also be usable with the gamepads.)
Can you remap (remap) the buttons and keys?
That's fine. If you want to remap the individual controls of the 8BitDo controllers, you can do this in the settings on the individual Apple devices - but only after pairing via Bluetooth or cable, before these menu items are not displayed:

- Apple TV: Settings -> General -> Remotes and Devices -> Bluetooth
Under macOS (latest version of Ventura), select "Game controllers" in the system settings and click on the plus symbol (+) under the profile overview. This will take you to this list for remapping the controller buttons.

You can also remap the buttons, sticks and buttons of gamepads on the iPhone from the latest iOS version. That's what it looks like.

Can you control the home screen?
This is possible on the iPad and Apple TV. This is not supported on the iPhone.
What restrictions are there?
Currently, when using the 8BitDo game controllers with Apple devices, neither motion control nor vibration (rumble) are available. However, it is possible that these functions will be added with a later update. The same applies to the 2.4G function of the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G, which cannot be paired with the offered dongle either (but via Bluetooth and cable).
