Kitchen scales without batteries - the current bestsellers

I like to browse electronic gadgets and come across products that were previously unknown to me. In this case, battery-free kitchen scales. The advantage of these things: They work electronically, but you never stand with a functionless scale because simply no battery can be empty.

There are also digital kitchen scales that do not require batteries and generate their electricity by converting kinetic energy.

Type 1: Kitchen scales with analog display

This well-tried type of battery-free kitchen scales is probably familiar to everyone from the past: simple, analog scales that work with a pointer and a spring. Logically, no battery can give up its ghost here, since the device does not need any.

The disadvantages here, however, are that you don't have a pretty electronic display and there is no button to zero the weight. This means that with recipes with several ingredients you either have to remove everything from the scale before weighing the next ingredient, or you have to be good at mental arithmetic.

Type 2: Digital kitchen scales without battery

This second type of scale is definitely the one that impressed me more, because it works electronically and is therefore dependent on electricity, but it still works without batteries. How it works? Quite simply: The balance converts kinetic energy that is created by movement into electrical energy and stores it in a capacitor (see Gold cap among others). In this way, the electronics of the digital scales have enough power available, no matter when they are fished out of the closet.

There is currently only one model that works like this, so the selection is still quite small. As soon as there are more products here, I'll add them here.

Type 3: Digital solar kitchen scales

Unfortunately, I cannot give any product recommendations for this type of balance. Everything I've read of customer reviews tends to tell me that you should keep your hands off these models. Here are the reasons why many customers rate the products poorly:

  • very imprecise (differences of 200 grams and more)
  • only works in direct sunlight (baking after sunset will be difficult)
  • weighs inaccurately if the bowl is not exactly centered
  • loses the measurement in between due to lack of light
