LAN cables with a length of 20 meters - an overview of the bestsellers

If you want a very reliable connection to the Internet, want to avoid the radio radiation caused by the W-LAN and still have to overcome a distance of more than 10 meters between router and computer or laptop, you should buy a LAN cable with a length of 20 meters don't get around. Because as you probably already know, an extension is one 10 meters of LAN cable not recommended, as extending an existing 10 meter LAN cable entails an additional plug connection. This can cause more interference.

The 20 meter network cables are suitable for bridging larger distances. It is important to have a kink protection and a protection that protects the sensitive plastic latch of the connector from breaking off (Photo: Pixabay).

Which category (Cat) of the LAN cable is suitable for which use?

Anyone who has ever dealt with LAN cables and is not that far removed from modern communication technology knows that LAN cables are now offered in different categories (Cat). These categories describe the respective capabilities of the network cable types and their transmission classes, the so-called link classes.

Today there are network cables in categories 1 to 7 (Cat 1 to Cat 7), whereas the cables of categories 1 and 2 no longer play a role in practical use. And the LAN cables of categories 3 and 4 are now also irrelevant for practical use and are only found in rare cases, such as those in old installations.

The network cables of Cat 5, Cat 6 and Cat 7 are relevant for current installations. The standard nowadays are Cat 5 cables. They can be found in most installations. Today they form the backbone of structured network cabling for computers and are suitable for Fast or Gigabit Ethernet.

The category of a LAN cable does not only depend on the type of use, but also on the Internet connection itself. With a 16Mbit line a Cat 5 LAN cable would be sufficient, if you have a 100Mbit network with you, a LAN cable Cat 5e is also sufficient.

And by the way: a WiFi cable there is not any. If you were sent out to buy one like that, you got charred.

Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable - which one should I use?

If you have a GBit network and a lot of traffic in your network, use a Cat6 / 6a LAN cable, because the areas of application of the Cat 6 LAN cables extend to all voice and data transmissions as well as to ATM and multimedia networks. If you need operating frequencies of up to 500 MHz, choose a network cable from the Cat 6a sub-category, as these are particularly powerful. To be very specific: Cat 6a network cables are suitable for 10 Gigabit Ethernet! The expert is amazed and the layman is amazed!

Ultimately, it can be said that it is worthwhile to make a few considerations as to which cable is the right one before buying a network cable. And of course, as everywhere, you should compare the prices: Because the various retailers offer different prices for network cables. For the "normal consumer", only a Cat 5 or Cat 6 can be implemented reasonably economically due to the costs.
