Which memory card for the Insta360 cameras (One X / Pro 2 / Air / Nano S)?

The Insta360 models (Titan, One X, Pro 2, Nano S and Air) are some of the best 360-degree cameras currently on the market. In order for the cameras to be able to use their full performance, they must be able to save the data on reliable and fast memory cards. If there is a data jam, there will be dropouts in the video later or the photos cannot be triggered in quick succession. Above all, "dropped frames" - that is, missing images - in the video are known that occur because the SD card could not save the video material quickly enough.

SD card size and number for each Insta360 model

SD cards (microSD and full SD) are used throughout the Insta360 product range (except Nano S and Air). Even in the top model "Titan", which with 11K is intended for professional cinema recordings, a total of nine SD cards are used at the same time. Since there are different quantities per camera, I have briefly listed which cards are required and which quantities we need for the respective camera:

  • Insta360 Nano S: none, as it backs up to the iPhone
  • Insta360 Air: none, as it backs up to the Android phone
  • Insta360 One: 1x microSD card
  • Insta360 One X: 1x microSD card
  • Insta360 Pro 2: 6x microSD + 1x SD card
  • Insta360 Titan: 9x SD card

Consider at least 64GB for the size. With the Insta360 One X, this storage capacity is roughly enough for 80 minutes of recording time if you record at 5,7K at 30 frames per second. According to Insta360, however, you can also use 128 GB cards. The manufacturer does not currently list more GB of storage capacity as compatible. The file system should be exFAT (FAT64), which is usually the case with fresh SD cards.

The manufacturer recommends using at least Video Speed Class V30 for the card's speed class. This corresponds to the UHS speed class U3 - i.e. approx. 30 MB per second.

The recommendations for the Insta360 cameras

In brief, we need a 64 GB or 128 GB microSD card with speed class U3 or V30. I have been leaning towards the SD cards from SanDisk for years because they are very reliable and have not yet produced a single failure on me. So that you can choose between the best microSD cards of both sizes (64 and 128 GB), I have put together the current bestsellers from Amazon for both sizes, which also received the best customer ratings.
