UHD is short for Ultra high definition and describes a graphic display standard and TV standard. While Full High Definition, Full HD for short, is specified with a pixel count of 1920 x 1080 pixels, UHD-enabled devices can display content in 3840 x 2160 pixels. This variant is also known as UHD-1 and can play both films and other TV content in 4K.

The term 4K was originally used for the playback quality of film content on cinema screens and was only allowed to be used at resolutions of 4096 x 2160 pixels. In the meantime, however, the playback of TV content and films in UHD-1 resolution is referred to as 4K.

The UHD-1 standard is opposed to the UHD-2 standard. UHD-2 displays film and TV content in 8K. This corresponds to a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels. UHD-capable devices may use the 5K designation if they can offer a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels (see also 5K monitors). UHD-capable devices such as UHD monitors are very popular with gamers. Furthermore, UHD-capable televisions are currently experiencing a boom and there is almost an “arms race” taking place among the providers. Below are the benefits, advantages and disadvantages of UHD capable monitors described in more detail. Furthermore, the use of a UHD monitor with Apple devices is discussed.

UHD monitor - functionality and use of the devices

A UHD monitor is able to display media content more sharply than full HD monitors. The 4K resolution is particularly advantageous for films and videos. As a rule, films and videos on UHD monitors are displayed more clearly and with higher contrast compared to identical content played back on Full HD devices. The sharper display is one reason why UHD televisions are becoming increasingly popular. Those who like to stream, DVB-T2 or other HVEC-coded HD or UHD content will usually use a UHD television with an integrated DVB-T2 receiver and HVEC encoder.

But what are the benefits of a UHD monitor?

A monitor is of course interesting for PC and gaming console users. Gamers who need high-resolution graphics should definitely go for a 4K or even 5K UHD monitor. If you only use office applications or only need your PC to surf the Internet or check e-mails, you will hardly notice any difference between Full HD monitors and UHD monitors. Nevertheless, the UHD monitor can be interesting away from film, television and game applications. The UHD monitor is useful, for example, in graphics applications such as photo editing programs, graphics-rich presentations, and video editing programs. Photos, videos and graphics are displayed more sharply when enlarged than on full HD devices.

  • ideal for presenting presentations
  • Recommended for gaming, video / photo editing, graphics editing
  • Recommended for streaming content (but should have HVEC encoder)

Many manufacturers enable the use of UHD monitors with smartphones, tablet PCs and PCs. The synchronization option via cable and wireless depends on the respective operating system and the connections. This applies to both the monitor and the peripheral device to be synchronized. A UHD monitor is even worthwhile for displaying smartphone content. Because most smartphone cameras have at least 12 megapixels or more. 12 megapixels - Photo cameras can achieve resolutions of 4096 x 3072 pixels. Of course, photos and videos with this resolution are displayed sharper on a UHD-capable monitor than on a Full HD monitor. UHD monitors are also interesting for streaming media content via tablet PC or streaming boxes or streaming sticks. For example Google, Amazon and Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), offer streaming boxes and streaming sticks to play media content. While with most providers it is enough to make sure that the UHD monitor is sufficient HDMI-connectors, you should pay attention to connections and system compatibility, especially with Apple.

Apple devices can of course be connected to UHD monitors. For example, iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air from the end of 2013 can be connected to UHD devices via HDMI connection or "Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter". However, newer models require a USB-C adapter. Streaming 4K content from the Apple TV box is a different story. While Amazon offers a 4K-capable TV box, the Apple TV box still has to wait for a 4K-capable TV box.

Conclusion: Sharp images are not only interesting for gamers!

Buying a UHD monitor is worthwhile for gamers and users of multimedia applications. When buying a monitor, you should ensure that there are sufficient HDMI and Displayport connections. Smartphones can, for example, be connected directly to the UHD monitor using an MHL cable (Mobile High Definition Link).
