CAMSTICKER® put to the test: webcam stickers that can be removed without leaving any residue

I hardly ever use the Facetime camera on the iPad. Accordingly, permanent masking of the same makes perfect sense. Normally, however, I would have chosen black rather than color. ;-)

There was a short time ago on Sir Apfelot a report on the subject of "webcam coverage". We presented various sticker sets from different manufacturers that can be used to cover the Facetime camera on the iPad or iPhone and the webcam in the iMac or MacBook. Referring to the post, the manufacturer of the CAMSTICKER® wrote that they would like to send me a few sets to test. An offer that I gladly accepted, in order to get a practical impression of the sticker. Two days after my answer I received an envelope with the little anti-spy stickers.

The sets from CAMSTICKER® mainly offer variants in colors and sizes. Colorful patterns or nerdy icons are not the focus of the portfolio. For my taste, however, that goes well with the simple design of the Apple products (photos: Sir Apfelot).

Wide range of colors and sizes

THE CAMSTICKER® Webcam stickers are available in various sets with different sizes, quantities and colors. So that I could really live out my test, I was given a number of sets in black, white, red and aluminum-silver.

In practice, I would of course match the choice of color to the color of the respective device - unless you want it to be particularly noticeable so that the sticker catches the eye. A choice of high-contrast colors may make sense if you want to remove it here and there, because then you can find the place where you can remove it more quickly. However, I leave the stickers in place for a very long time and accordingly I prefer an adapted color for the stickers.

I only used a different color for some of my photos with a contrast to the background so that you can see the webcam sticker better. "Wrong color choice" for documentation purposes, so to speak. ;-)

Webcam sticker in a practical test

After seeing the photos of the CAMSTICKER® After I made packs, it was time to try it out. It struck me positively that the sticker packs can be closed again. As a rule, you only want to remove one or two and rarely empty the entire pack. The opened set can be closed again so that it is dust-proof and can be used later on if necessary.

The packaging of the CAMSTICKER® can be easily opened and reclosed, which is very useful for large sets.

The second positive thing is about the glue that the stickers stick with. As promised by the manufacturer, the stickers can be removed without leaving any residue. But - and that's not in the advertising - you can also briefly detach the webcam sticker to take a photo and then stick it back on. Of course, this doesn't work infinitely often, but you can easily recycle it 5 to 6 times. This is very helpful for me because I rarely use the iPhone's Facetime camera, for example. Just like the iSight camera on my MacBook.

The front camera of the iPad Pro 9,7 inch protrudes from the case, as is the case with the iPhone. The smallest size of the webcam sticker fits well here.

The sticker on the iPad camera is hardly noticeable. Only the small snippet to pull off sticks out a bit.

Usage tips

Another tip for attaching the CAMSTICKER®: For better positioning, I activated the camera and then switched to the corresponding front or rear camera. So you can see immediately whether the sticker also covers the entire camera. In my first test on the iPad, I did not position it correctly, so that you still had an open strip through which the camera “looked”.

It is helpful to activate the camera to check the position of the sticker directly while masking. So you can see straight away if the webcam sticker - like here with me - is incorrectly positioned.

If you have a larger area like on the front of the iPad or iPhone, I would also recommend using a larger sticker. These are easier to apply and it is less difficult to “catch” the camera's field of view.

Only for the protruding front camera of the iPhone and iPad makes sense to use the smallest size so that the sticker does not protrude over the edge.

Good choice: the right color for the substrate

The color variants are helpful if you are not looking for squeaky colorful webcam stickers as we are looking for them presented in the last post. If you prefer a subtle look, you can make your iPhone or iPad “spy-proof” with black, white and silver-gray stickers and still don't have to spoil the elegant design.

For example, a large, silver sticker is perfect for my old Retina iPad (Gen. 3). As you can see in the photos, from a certain distance you can hardly see that there is a sticker over the camera.

The color of the silver stickers is a perfect match for the aluminum case of the iPad.

With the iPhone rear camera, I already had problems taking a photo on which you can still see the sticker - black on black is a challenge for every camera. :)

Criticism: Rapid damage from fingernails

I'm with the stickers from CAMSTICKER® basically very satisfied. The only thing that I could criticize would be the material of the stickers (the silver stickers are an exception), which is sometimes already bent and stuck together when I peel it off with my fingernail. Maybe I just haven't gotten the hang of it yet, but in a third of the cases there was a tiny little corner sticking out after I had put the stickers on, because I didn't seem careful enough.

But I can also praise the criticism afterwards, because the stickers - despite the small protruding spots - had to spend a few days in my back pocket on the iPhone. So far nothing has come off that I would rate as very positive.

Why I cannot recommend the sliding covers for the iPhone camera

By the way, this is exactly the reason why I would advise against these sliding magnet webcam covers. With these things, the pane only sticks to the frame due to magnetism, which of course leads to the fact that the cover constantly becomes independent in the trouser pockets and sooner or later you only have to stick the frame to the smartphone, but no longer a pane to cover the webcam . For this reason, the webcam stickers are the better solution to have permanent "peace".

My conclusion

I have to admit that it was only after watching the series "Mr. Robot" that I thought about how to use the cameras of smartphones, tablets or laptops as a bad boy or bad girl. In the film, a Trojan horse is smuggled onto a woman's notebook, via which the villain then records compromising scenes in the apartment. These are then used for blackmail. For me, that was a very realistic - and terrifying - scenario that got by without rocket technology.

And if you still find this too unrealistic, you should just google for "Federal Trojan". Then you can see what ambition the secret services are showing to get hidden control over smartphones. It should be clear that we are certainly not 100% safe here, even as Apple users. The small webcam stickers do not cost the earth and make a good contribution in the area of "private counter-espionage".

Whether you stick a piece of duct tape on your smartphone to cover the cameras or prefer to use a webcam sticker is of course up to you. ;-)

I can do that Webcam stickers from CAMSTICKER® in any case, certify good grades in terms of quality. If you have a laptop as well as a tablet and smartphone, you should perhaps use the set with the mixed sizes. This gives you the best chance of being able to cover all cameras.

CAMSTICKER webcam sticker set
You can get 39 webcam stickers in different sizes for less than 10 euros. The small stickers that cover the rear cameras of popular smartphones are most often included.

And as I said: The stickers can be used a few times, so that you don't need new ones for a long time if you don't want to re-attach the camera several times a day.

Thanks again to CAMSTICKER® for the many sets that will surely cover my needs for the next 10 years. For you another note: I write these tests of products without any monetary or contractual obligation that a positive result must come out. I am so free that I also express criticism about products if something strikes me.
