A simple and convenient way to give visitors access to your WiFi network is to generate and provide a QR code. Now there are some websites that offer such a Wifi-to-QR code generator, but on most of them you submit the form and the entered WiFi access data ends up on the provider's server and you have no idea what happens to it .
Chapter in this post:
Why qifi.org is the safer choice…
A website that does this better and safer is qifi.org. On this website, the QR code is not generated on the provider's server, but directly in the Browser of the visitor with a javascript. This means that the access data entered for your Wifi does not leave your computer and can therefore not be used by dubious companies.
Because I like the solution so much, I got one from Qifi.org “Pick of the week” – an award that I would like to give more often again in 2023.
This is how the QR code with WiFi access works
With Qifi you can create a custom QR code that contains the credentials for your WiFi network. To do this, enter the name of your WiFi (SSID) and the access password on the website. If you want, you can also specify what type of encryption your Wifi uses and the Javascript from Qifi generates the corresponding code at the push of a button.
You can then download this, print it out and put it up in your home or office for visitors to scan with their smartphones and easily access the internet. The nice thing is that you can save yourself from having to pass on complicated passwords or network names verbally.
Who can still use Qifi.org…
Qifi.org is a great solution and especially useful in environments like offices, cafes or small hotels that get regular traffic. Such a Wifi QR code should also be interesting for clinics, communities or public institutions.
With Qifi, for example, cafe operators or holiday home landlords can ensure that guests always have access to the Internet without having to pass on this data in a complicated way.
It is important to note, however, that the QR code can of course also be used to read the data in plain text. In principle, anyone who can see the QR code also has your WiFi data. So think carefully about where you should put the code and where better not.
Create wifi qr code with any qr code generator
If you don't trust the way via Qifi, you can easily create a Wifi QR code yourself with the QR code generator of your choice. To do this, simply exchange the network name and password in the following string and then send the text to the generator.
WIFI:S: ;T: ;P: ;;
Thus, the generation of the Wifi code should also satisfy paranoid readers. Although: They probably won't want to share their Wifi access anyway. 😊
