Disk Utility: Manage Storage on Apple Mac

There are several so called utilities in macOS on Apple Mac and one of them is Disk Utility. As the name suggests, it serves to manage the computer's hard drive and its storage space. But other storage media, such as external hard drives or USB sticks, can also be managed via this system-specific app. Correct errors, delete storage media, specify other file systems, create partitions or volumes and more is possible. This guide will give you a little introduction. The following screenshot is below macOS Venture 13.1 been created.

Open Disk Utility: Here's how!

There are several ways to open Disk Utility. Here I have summarized three ways for you to reach the storage media management of macOS:

  • Opens the Finder and in it the Macintosh HD, then the Programfolder and in it the Utilities-Folder
  • Open that Launchpad (via the Dock or the Applications folder) and look for Disk Utility there
  • use the Spotlight-Search (command+space), the correct program should be suggested after entering the first few letters

You can do this in Disk Utility

As briefly explained at the beginning, this system app is intended to manage storage devices built into the Mac as well as storage devices connected via USB or Thunderbolt. There are options that can be used for internal as well as external storage media. However, individual tasks and their subordinate steps are only available for the internal hard disks.

Overall, you can use the utility for this:

  • Format storage media and set file systems to adjust compatibility
  • Creation and management of partitions or volumes on the internal storage devices
  • Check hard drives and other storage media for errors and fix them
  • Creation of an image file, i.e. a storage medium image in the form of a single file
  • Merging multiple hard drives into a RAID system, which can then be used like a hard drive

Disk Utility in recovery mode

In Apple Mac's Recovery Mode, Disk Utility can also be selected from a list of macOS utilities. It serves there z. B. reinstalling the operating system and completely erasing internal hard drives. The following guides show you how to start macOS Recovery when you start your computer:
