DJI-FPV the market-leading manufacturer of quadrocopter cameras, DJI, has released a drone set with an FPV drone, the associated controller and suitable glasses for the "first person view" flight this week. This means that the flights can not only be enjoyed in real time, but also recorded. The impressions from the air can be saved as 4K or full HD video with 50 to 120 fps. Which SD cards are suitable for the DJI FPV drone?

According to the information from DJI, a microSD with up to 256 GB of storage space can be plugged into both the DJI FPV and the goggles. Here in the blog, we always recommend the SanDisk brand for SD cards. Why? You read that here. When looking for the right SD card for the DJI FPV, you should also make sure that large storage capacities are labeled SDXC (Extended Capacity). In summary, the “SanDisk Extreme” microSDXCmemory Cards recommend, which are available with 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and other storage volumes up to 1TB. You can find the selection with this link.

How much memory do I actually need for 4K recordings?

The DJI FPV allows you to record Full HD videos with a resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 pixels as well as 4K videos with a resolution of 3.840 x 2.160 pixels. The lowest fps- or Hz number is 50. In addition, 4K videos with 60 fps are possible. In Full HD, recordings with 100 and 120 fps are also possible. A different compression of the recordings results from the selectable video formats.mp4 and .mov. When calculating the correct memory size of the microSDXC card, it should also be noted that one battery charge of the DJI FPV is sufficient for a flight of approx. 20 minutes.

So how much memory do I need for Full HD and 4K recordings if I want to make them with the DJI FPV drone? For the answer I tried to use different sources, which is not that easy. If you are looking for storage sizes for 4K and HD videos, you will usually only come up with a guide to iPhone settings - but we already have one of those ourselves. And after this, 4K with 60 fps per minute consumes 400 MB of memory, i.e. almost 20 GB for 8 minutes.

I finally found what I was looking for at Kingston and at ClickLikeThis. With the information from these more general sources, the following can be gathered:

  • 16 to 28 minutes of 33K video at 4 fps can be stored on a 30 GB card
  • For recordings of the DJI FPV, around half is to be assumed (since the fps number is higher)
  • Up to 16 hour of 1p video at 1080 fps can be stored on a 30 GB card
  • Here, too, it must be noted that the drone can record with 50 to 120 fps
  • If you are traveling with several batteries and can record for a correspondingly long time, use at least a 64 GB or 128 GB card

DJI FPV SD Card: Storage Cheaper Nowadays

I know that the above notes and "calculations" are more like the rule of thumb. However, 64 GB, 128 GB and even 256 GB memory cards are not that expensive these days. Only with larger storage volumes such as 512 GB or 1 TB on the small cards do the prices rise significantly again. But such SD cards are not recommended for the DJI FPV drone. In addition, you can use cards with 64 to 256 GB flexibly, also as memory in other cameras and in other mobile devices of all kinds. It is therefore worthwhile to use a larger model several times.
