Chapter in this post:
As on pretty much all other web platforms, you can also have your account deactivated and deleted on Twitter. However, if you do not want to lose all tweets, comments, media and other content, you can download an archive in .zip format first. In this guide I have summarized how you apply for the ZIP file, how long it takes to create it and what else you need to know. If you have any questions or tips on the subject, please leave a comment.
In the desktop and web browser versions of Twitter, you can access the corresponding option via the "More" menu. To do this, log in to the website with your account name or email address and your password. Then proceed as follows on the Twitter website:
In the iOS app on the Apple iPhone you can also use the menu to navigate to the option with which you can request your account archive from Twitter. However, you will be redirected to the website relatively quickly, where you have to log in and go through the above steps. Therefore, I would recommend you to go directly to a Mac or PC. But if you just have your smartphone ready, then proceed as follows:
With the above steps you only apply for the collection of your data as a ZIP package. Putting it together can take two to three days. If you use the Twitter app, you will receive a push message there when it is available for download. However, you can always check the menu using the method shown above – if the Twitter Account Archive download is available, you will see a corresponding button there. Again, you can only use the web version. The app only gives you the message that the download is ready, I would recommend downloading and unzipping on a Mac or PC.
Once you have downloaded the file, you can unzip it. You don't need an additional app on the Apple Mac under macOS, just double-click on the file. This creates a second folder with the unfolded content, which you can open as usual. In addition to other folders with all the individual content, you will find a file in it that you can open in the web browser. It shows you a web page (running locally) where you can access your content, media and news, similar to the Twitter web page. However, the names of the other accounts and their profile pictures are missing from the dialogues. So you may have to assign it from the context.
