Mistake seen: Sparkasse will introduce Apple Pay in 2019

After Apple Pay arrived in Germany in 2018, there was a lot of positive feedback. However, it was precisely the Sparkasse, a credit institute used by many in Germany, that refused to link the Girocard (formerly EC card) with the payment service. The reason was a planned Girocard payment service that Android users have long improvised by transferring money to their PayPal account and using it with Google Pay. The Sparkasse now seems to have realized that its own solution is not being well received. Because after initial negotiations it is now said that Apple Pay support will come this year.

The savings banks will support Apple Pay on iOS on the iPhone this year. In addition to MasterCard, VISA and American Express, the Girocard can also be used for contactless payments via NFC.

Negotiations between Sparkassen and Apple soon to be concluded

Amongst other things WinFuture reported with reference to the Reutersthat Apple Pay will be available to Sparkasse customers with Girocard in 2019. So far, Apple users who are with a Sparkasse can only use VISA, MasterCard or American Express cards add to wallet. According to Helmut Schleweis, President of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV), the regular account card with direct debits will soon be added. A good sign, as the bank in red is finally saying goodbye to the need for individual solutions for its customers.

Kwitt, mobile payment, etc. should continue to exist

There are currently some app solutions that Sparkasse customers can use to send and receive money digitally. These are in particular Kwitt, Paydirekt and Mobile Paying. With the support of Apple Pay, the savings banks want to stick to these solutions. Since Apple does not open its NFC (Near Field Communication) in the iPhone to third-party providers, these solutions for contactless payment are only of interest to Android users. Whether or not they will also receive support from Google Pay with the move towards larger collection solutions is currently not yet available.

What do you think of the savings banks' insight? Are you looking forward to Apple Pay's support later this year? Feel free to leave a comment on the topic;)
