Reader's question: FileMaker Pro crashes on macOS High Sierra

Version 11, 12 and 13 of the FileMaker database program obviously has significant problems with Apple's macOS High Sierra.

Today a reader asked me if I could help as his FileMaker Pro 12 keeps crashing on his MacBook since he updated that Mac to macOS High Sierra. Since I haven't been using Filemaker Pro for years, I only had to "google" as a way to help. I'm on one Forum entry found in filemaker-magazin.de, which brings a little light into the dark.

Many FileMaker users seem to have this problem there, since several users have been speaking since October 2017 who report regular crashes under both macOS Sierra (10.12) and High Sierra (10-13). Apparently all FileMaker versions up to FM 13 are affected.

The solution

If you have already updated your Mac system and can no longer go back to El Capitan, the only solution is actually a FileMaker upgrade to version 14, 15 or 16. These versions obviously don't seem big with the new operating system from Apple To have problems. However, a forum writer reports that only FileMaker 16 really runs completely "clean" for him.

Since the crashes seem to be related to the "own dialogs", a forum reader suggested this solution: exchange dialogs through layouts or pop-ups.

symptoms

I have put together a few "symptoms" for you that other readers report on. Perhaps one or the other behavior sounds familiar to you:

  • FMPA11 was already installed and Sierra set the computer to High Sierra. Since then, FMPA11 has been crashing at startup.
  • When you close FileMaker, the Crash Report dialog opens.
  • Clicking any buttons in Custom Dialogues regularly leads to crashes in FileMaker13 runtimes in connection with macOS HighSierra.
  • When you press the export button in the data export window, the software smears (High Sierra and FM 13).
  • The text selection cannot be changed in the formula editor (the entire text is selected or at least highlighted in yellow).
  • For some users, FM 9 and FM 10 are still running, but FileMaker versions 11, 12 and 13 are no longer running.
  • FM crashes when closing dialogs - regardless of whether it is program-specific such as settings or "own dialog" (custom dialogues).
