Font in YouTube app on iPad/iPhone no longer readable (white font on white background)

Font no longer readable in YouTube app

The following error has been haunting me for a few days with the YouTube iOS app: When I start the app, everything is ok, but after a while the app changes the color of the video title font to a light gray or white font, with the background of the App but still remains bright. The result: you can no longer read anything.

This is what YouTube looks like on my iPad: light font on a light background.

From what I've read, this problem has been present since the iOS and iPadOS update 17.4. So there is hope that one of the next updates will fix the problem. Until then, these two workarounds work.

1. Solution: Close and restart the YouTube app

My previous solution to the problem was to force quit the YouTube app and then restart it. You can close the app by swiping your finger upwards from the bottom edge of the screen. Then the app switcher appears and there you can swipe the YouTube app upwards to close it.

Then just restart and the font should be black on a white background again.

You can “kill” the YouTube app using the app switcher.

2. Solution: Activate dark mode

The second - in my opinion more elegant solution - is to activate “dark mode” on the iPad or iPhone. So that you can quickly switch dark mode on and off, I would recommend using it in... control center Add.

This is done this way:

  1. Open settings
  2. Select Control Center
  3. Look for “Dark Mode” down there and add it to the control center using the plus symbol
  4. Now swipe down from the top right edge of the screen to open the control center
  5. Then tap the dark mode icon there

Now the background in the YouTube app should be dark and the font should be white. So readable again. ;-)

The dark mode button can be added to the Control Center via Settings.

You can then activate dark mode via the control center.
You can then activate dark mode via the control center.

As far as I could see, you only have to activate dark mode briefly and deactivate it again and the font can be seen again with the normal colors. If that doesn't work for you: just leave dark mode activated.

What about with you? Do the tricks work? Feel free to leave a comment.

  1. Strange!
I don't have this issue on either the iPad Pro or the iPhone 14Pro.

    Both with iOS 17.4.1

According to the screenshot you are a PREMIUM user.
    Maybe that's why?

This doesn't appear on my normal account.

    🤷🏻♂️

    1. Hello Nicolas! I can't say exactly why and when it occurs. But I found a few other people on Reddit who had the same problem. So it's not imaginary. 😂 I assume it will probably be gone with the next YouTube or iOS update.

      1. Of course I didn't mean to imply that it was my imagination...

The famous ghost in the machine or in the code strikes unexpectedly 😈

In Safari on the Mac on YouTube, I had the window stop at 3/4 when maximizing 🤪
Minimizing again and maximizing again helped.
Now fixed with a Safari update...

I'm now reading a book that's getting dog ears at most 🤓

        Happy Easter 🐣

        1. Hello Nicolas! Yes, some bugs are strange. Books are quite reliable. They can just be boring... but there's not much you can do about them. And there won't be an update either. 😂 Happy Easter to you too!
