getAbstract: Book summaries for the lazy

The service getAbstract offers book summaries of non-fiction and literary classics. This makes the service an exciting addition or even an alternative to it Blinkist. If you don't know what Blinkist is, you will find it here is my experience report. I will also give you a test of getAbstract soon; In this post I will only give you the most important general information about the offer. If you have experience with the book reading service yourself, please leave a comment.

getAbstract offers condensed book knowledge for entrepreneurs, companies, the self-employed and more. Literary classics, biographies and historical knowledge are also included.

getAbstract is clearly aimed at companies

It is no coincidence that this provider mainly focuses on non-fiction books. It is also less of a concession to the fact that novels can only develop their charm and fantastic content through careful reading. Rather, getAbstract is geared towards the rapidly advancing development of the markets - keyword: digitization. With “compressed knowledge”, as the provider calls it, employers should be able to train their workforce in a targeted manner. Correspondingly, there are on the website of the service as customers such company names as EON, EnBW, General Electric and Daimler. So-called "channels" are offered in which summaries of books on the following topics can be found:

  • Professional development
  • Self-help
  • Organizational development
  • Teamwork
  • Guide
  • Guest and crisis management
  • self-realization
  • Innovation
  • and a few more

What else is there at getAbstract?

In addition to the further training of executives, executives and all other employees, getAbstract can also be used for general knowledge. The categories of book summaries on offer contain condensed knowledge on topics such as science, politics, literary classics, biographies and history. In the “History” section there is a large selection of information, locations and people that actually go back a long way, but also more recent considerations of personalities, incidents, crises and developments. The business impact in the entirety of the titles cannot be denied. For the "casual reader" who just wants to be entertained, getAbstract is not really something.

My criteria: app, offline content and Kindle compatibility

I will provide you with a comprehensive comparison of Blinkist and getAbstract in a separate article. However, I was curious about the service presented here, whether it could keep up with the Blinkist offers. Because I like to use the iOS app on the iPhone, the ability to read / listen to content offline, as well as the spoken book summaries as MP3 - and, last but not least, the option of downloading everything to the Amazon Kindle. And what can I say: getAbstract also offers all of this and much more in the corresponding packages or tariffs (see below). There are also curated and personal channels and even tailor-made company portals for companies.

Offer: More than 20.000 titles summarized

While Blinkist advertises “more than 3.000 titles”, getAbstract already offers 5.000 book summaries in the cheapest subscription package. With a pro subscription, there are already 20.000+ books whose summaries can be read or listened to. However, as already mentioned, the focus at getAbstract is primarily on entrepreneurship and business-oriented personal development. These areas are only part of what Blinkist has to offer; there, for example, there are also the subjects of “nutrition & health” and “personal development” - the latter not always related to productivity and profit maximization. The bare numbers do not say anything about which offer suits you better;)

Prices - the cost of condensed knowledge

The getAbstract team summarizes the individual books - according to their own information - into versions that can be consumed in ten minutes. The content can be accessed on the web using a Mac or PC, as well as an app on iOS and Android. In addition to the text versions, there are also audio summaries. In the screenshot following the price list you will find the differences between the individual offers. You can also see them exactly on the Website of the service provider.

  • getAbstract Starter: € 99 per year
  • Starter for students1: Free
  • getAbstract Pro: € 299 per year
  • Pro for students1: 59 € a year
  • getAbstract for companies: on request

1 = only with a valid student certificate

The prices for the getAbstract subscriptions at a glance. Companies have to make an individual request; Students can even use the service for free.

Preliminary conclusion on getAbstract

There are considerably more combined titles with this provider than with the competition I have already tested. However, if you just want to decide between the two, you should not only orient yourself to it. While an app with offline and audio content can be used with both, the topics are not 100% the same. So if you want to train yourself in a company and climb the corporate ladder, you might be better off at getAbstract. Blinkist is something for those who want to have popular scientific works, history without too much business reference and advice without maximizing ideas ...
