HERE WeGo user manual - this is how the navigation app works

HERE WeGo (by: Here we go = Here we go) is a navigation app that is a viable alternative to Google Maps and Apple Maps represents. The service is available both in the browser and in the form of its own program on iOS and Android devices. The download is free, but advertisements are displayed every now and then when you use it. In this small HERE WeGo / HERE We Go operating manual, I have compiled the advantages and disadvantages you can expect from the program.

Note: This post is from 2019. Information may be out of date. An update of the article is still pending.

You can also access the HERE WeGo map material on Mac and PC via the browser. More tips can be found in this little HERE WeGo user manual.

HERE WeGo app - download or browser use

You can use the map and navigation material from HERE WeGo in your web browser on an Apple Mac with macOS or on a Windows PC. To do this, you just call this page on. The free download of the app, with which you can also use maps downloaded offline, can be found for the iPhone in App Store as well as for Android smartphones in Play Store. After downloading the HERE WeGo, it is useful to allow the app to access the location. This makes route planning and navigation much easier. In addition, when using it for the first time and later in the settings, you can specify whether you want to participate in the app's optimization program and / or receive traffic information for your routes.

Here we go! Instruction manual or not?

Basically, both the website and the app can be operated intuitively. Everything is structured similarly to Google Maps, and there are also similarities to Apple Maps. The navigation can be activated with the route symbol (straight arrow with arrow turning to the right). As a start you can select an address or the current location. Enter an address, coordinates or other unique values as the destination. If you only enter a city or place name, the route to the corresponding center is calculated.

After the HERE WeGo download, the app is quickly ready for use. A few adjustments and off you go!

If you do not know the exact address of your destination or other values such as the coordinates or the POI name, the destination can also be marked otherwise. In the app, for example, you can use 3D Touch, so long press the target. Then different symbols appear around the selected point; including the double arrow for route planning. Traffic reports or options for traveling by public transport can also be called up in this way. Let go, then the place remains marked. The "Calculate route" button then appears at the bottom, which offers another option for activating the navigation.

Calculate the route by selecting the destination directly on the map - this can be done in different ways.

The display of various travel and transport options is another advantage of HERE WeGo. Where available, not only buses, trains, trams, underground trains etc. are displayed, but also car sharing services such as Car2Go. Some of them can be booked directly from the app if you are connected to the Internet. If not, then at least the offline maps, which you can download before the trip, will help you. Ideal for rural areas with a poor cellular network or for holidays abroad where you have to worry about roaming costs.

Use HERE WeGo offline maps

Loading maps onto your iPhone or Android smartphone is very easy with HERE WeGo. For example, you can simply go to the menu (the three lines in the top left) and tap "Download maps" next to the map symbol. Even if you have not yet downloaded any HERE WeGo offline maps, but have activated the “Use app offline” slider, you will be able to load the material for the currently selected region. This is useful if you want to make sure that you can find your way around without a network at the destination airport, at the train station in a strange city or elsewhere at a WiFi hotspot.

HERE WeGo instruction manual in brief

After downloading the app, you should allow the app to access the location while it is in use. Then route planning (using the arrow symbol or 3D touch) and navigation online and offline are child's play:

  1. Select the location or starting point for the route
  2. Select your destination and have the route calculated
  3. Let's start!

If you have determined that traffic reports should be part of the navigation, you can avoid traffic jams and other problems in good time. Of course, this is not possible offline. If you call up the app because you are disoriented, then simply press the green circle at the bottom left; Your location is already determined and displayed. So you can see the surroundings directly and find your way around. You can find more help, tips and tricks for using HERE WeGo in the official FAQ.

Disadvantages of the HERE WeGo app

Some users state in their test and experience reports as well as in ratings of the service that some POI names are not spelled correctly on HERE WeGo. One example is the University of Hamburg, which was written as “Univerität Hamburg”. I just checked - and at least this bug seems to be fixed. The advertising mentioned above could also be annoying, but I haven't come across it in my short test for this post. So you don't get annoyed with it all the time. Probably the biggest drawback could be the sometimes slightly wrong or not optimally chosen routes, which some users have criticized in the past. But if you check the most important points before driving off, you should be on the safe side.

Conclusion on the HERE WeGo app, operation and maps

You can read from users that the functions shown work great, but that there could be small shortcomings here and there. As a Google Maps alternative or Apple Maps alternative, the HERE WeGo app should definitely be able to do a good job - especially in the area of offline maps. Offline navigation is a big plus with this service. What do you think? Do you use the app yourself or do you rely on completely different offers for iOS and Android? Feel free to leave a comment with your travel experience;)

    1. Hello HJ! Normally, iOS apps adapt their language to the system setting. This means that if your iPhone "speaks" German, the apps know that and try to deliver the appropriate language as well. Here WeGo also says on the app detail page that German is available. So it should actually be displayed in German by itself. VG! Jens

    2. Hello HJ,

As Jens wrote correctly, the app should be based on the system language. However, it is possible that the language options in the navigation settings are adjusted.

Just open the app, tap on the three menu lines in the top left, then on “Settings” and then under “Navigation Settings” on “Language Options”. The language German can then be set there instead of English. Maybe that will help.

      Best regards
      John

      1. Martina Mueller

Hello, does the language on the navigation system also work when listening to music via Bluetooth?

        1. Jen Kleinholz

Hello Martina! I can't exactly speak for HereWeGo, but it works that way with other navigation apps. You can listen to music and when an announcement comes, the music is paused or briefly turned down.

    3. No problems using it, very good BUT i can't find a way to delete previous goals, it says click the hamburger sign, problem is
      there is no ** $% + & ** hamburger sign ..
The youtube videos are also “educational” but of course never anything about the more complicated questions…
      Aaaarggh!

    1. Hello Rainer! How do you mean? Can you export such GPS tracks from it? Or whether the makers of Here WeGo track your location?

  1. Hello and thank you very much for your great help with the Here app, I'm currently navigating offline through Italy, works fine, only the green current location point is missing, something is bothering me, can I switch it on somewhere? Thanks and Greetings

    1. Johannes Domke

      Hello Marianne,

that's funny. Actually, the location is always displayed. Have you accidentally deactivated the GPS / location service or not enabled it for the app? If you're in airplane mode, it may be because of that. Extensive support, where questions about Here WeGo are answered, is available in this FAQ: click here. Maybe there is another problem listed that I can't think of at the moment.

      Have fun in Italy!

      Best regards
      John

  2. Hello Johannes, thank you for your answer, yes, it's strange, navigate with an older tablet, GPS on and flight mode off, navigation also works fine, I'll take a look at the link with the FAQ ... Greetings

    1. I checked the app's settings yesterday, but there's nothing that looks like you can toggle the location pin on and off. There must be some bug. I would ask: “Did you try switching it off and on again?”. ;-)

  3. I've tried everything, switching it on and off, searching in the settings and found nothing. It's not that bad either, I can navigate, it would only be comfortable if the location pin worked, then when zooming in you would be able to see where you are on the route. I also have the app on my smartphone and it works flawlessly ... But, everything is half as bad and thanks again for your efforts!

  4. I am a travel blogger and ride my motorcycle around the world.

Here we go has become a complete disaster, so unfortunately I had to throw it off my cell phone.

I have used HWG for years, but for some time now nothing works, thrown down three times and reinstalled Maps on the external SD card all installed and then this message when searching for routes.
    “offline doesn’t work at all”

“no results could be displayed without internet connection” ????????

And on the account page I can see my profile that's it ??????

Unfortunately, I now have to continue using Google Maps. But there you can turn off the annoying inquiries as I liked it somewhere. But it works.

HWG would not be possible for me at the moment because I don't want to have routes displayed as a motorcyclist in non-EU countries. Absolute no-go

  5. Hello, I also have a problem or several. I've had the app on my tablet (Android) for two days and would like to save a route that I "created" on the PC (I'm also logged in there) so that I can call it up on the tablet. Where/how can I save a finished route?

I am currently using the free version and then cannot hear the language while routing. Is the speech output not included in the free version?

If I log in to the tablet again in the morning and want to be routed, HWG automatically only shows the autoroute in the offline version. But I ride a bike and can only change that when I'm online. But that doesn't work on the go because I need WiFi to be able to go online. How can I finally stop being shown only bike routes?

Hope I find solutions here, thank you very much in advance!

  6. Hello, I have a problem with HERE WeGo
when I connect my Android mobile phone to my car screen with the UBS cable, I can navigate with Google Maps. it doesn't work with HERE WeGo can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong that it doesn't work?
Thank you in advance for your help

    1. Use it as a standalone device that plugs into your cigarette lighter for charging. I put a small, strong magnet on the dashboard, a small metal disk on the back of my phone protector to turn on my sat nav, and there are no more problems. There is obviously a conflict between the mobile app and the car screen. Why bother with it….

    1. Hello HZ,

In the HERE WeGo app for iOS on the iPhone, there is – as far as I know and after a short research – only the option to access the contacts in the “Contacts” system app of the same name. If you have stored the address of a person or a company in addition to the name and number in this telephone book, you can navigate there.

To do this, just proceed as follows:
Open the HERE WeGo app -> In the map view, tap on “Set destination” (next to the magnifying glass icon) -> When prompted to “Browse contacts” tap on “Yes, let’s go!” tap -> confirm the app's access to contacts

      Then it should work.

I am not aware of any access to other apps such as Outlook; but maybe you have a source for the information?

  7. Hallo,
How do I mark a location with here we go, e.g. my parking lot or my hotel, so that the navigation system will guide me back?

  8. Oops - Could it be that my somewhat older smartphone with Android 4.4.4 from HERE - which I have been using for years around the world - is no longer fully operated? Still works, can also load maps, but the voice navigation no longer works. I wanted to exchange the language, deleted the old one and no longer have access to the language download. Wouldn't have been a bad warning. Can I transfer the voice software from another device?

    1. Hello Eckart! Somehow you ended up with the wrong one. I don't have a single Android device (but a Kindle Fire!). : D But maybe a reader knows something that will help you.

    2. also no longer have any voice prompts when navigating! earlier without problems! Even after a new installation… ..nothing !!! Is there a solution or a possibility? Thank you for an answer

  9. After restarting the smartphone (battery empty), the route calculation no longer worked. Completely unusable this app.

    1. Hello Heiko! A lot of people think the app is pretty good. What exactly do you mean by "route calculation" no longer works? He can't find a way anymore or the option is gone?

      1. Hello, as already described the battery was empty. After restarting, I entered a route to be driven soon. Then came the announcement that the route calculation was taking place. But unfortunately nothing happened (except that the battery was empty :-) Routes that were already going were no longer calculated. So as you ask, he can no longer find a way

        1. If an app goes on strike like this, I would recommend the following: Press and hold the app icon so you can delete the app. Then reinstall and restart the iPhone. After that, it should actually work again.

  10. Hello, can someone tell me how to set the current time in Here we Go? The device is an ERISIN radio / navigation system with Android 9.

    1. I shoot in the dark, but I think the time here we go takes over from the Android system. That means it would have to be stopped there. But maybe someone has more experience with the combination. I'm not that Android freak. : D

  11. Thank you for this description! But it relates to the older version. In V 4, unfortunately, some things have been made worse. A selection:

You can finally sort the collections by name, but sorting by distance is and remains the basic setting. What's the nonsense? Who needs that?

Apparently they forgot to include the current location in a collection. Or did I miss something? You can try to hit the green location point with 3D touch, but this usually only works very imprecisely.

The map display is very low in contrast and difficult to see.

It's annoying that there aren't any instructions. The FAQ (still) refer to the old version.

The app consumes a lot of resources during navigation. My cell phone is getting really warm.

My favorite navigation app is still Here Drive + on an old Windows phone. But unfortunately you cannot take over the saved favorites. Unfortunately, Here Wego is a clear step backwards.

And last but not least, a location in the collection has been deleted and the collection is empty. I think I'll find another app ...

    1. why doesn't anyone answer?

Here's my question again: is there a possibility of a voice instruction that I didn't understand, e.g. "Take the next exit on the right...." that this is repeated

      1. Hello Friedrich! Unfortunately, I am not actively using Here we go and cannot help you, but I think im Forum there are better chances of getting an answer.

      2. Here Drive + couldn't do that. Then Here WeGo will certainly not be able to do it. In any case, I haven't found it yet.

      3. Hello, I would like to know that too.
with the old version I could do that with the volume button. the current version, updated yesterday, doesn't work. I find it very ugly.
        Regards

  12. Hello, I have a question, the screen shows the route for me, but not in the view I am used to from navigation systems. In addition, the card does not "move". How can I change this? If anyone knows a solution - thank you very much!

    1. Did you start the route too? In the beta version, a blue circle with an arrow appears next to the driving time. You have to tap on it and off you go.

  13. Since the last update, I no longer have voice output on the car radio, was previously without problems, Iphone 8 Plus.
do you have to adjust something somewhere?

    1. Hello Tuisz! So you can play normal audio from your iPhone on your car radio? Just to be on the safe side, I'm not asking that we are looking for the fault in the wrong place.

      1. Hands-free calling and listening to music are no problem
In the previous version you had to set this, but now I can't find an option for it

        1. Sometimes it helps to shoot down the app (swipe up in the app switcher) or to uninstall it completely and reinstall it. Would you try that out?

          1. Reinstall the app, no sound from the car radio
It works with the Iphone Maps app, you can switch on HFP dialogs.
That was still possible with the last Here version

  14. can I try
Before that, there was also a message in the radio display with the voice output, Call from my iPhone

    1. Have tried several external apps, doesn't seem to work with all of them, more of an iPhone setting, but which one?

      1. Hello Tiusz! Sometimes you just have to 1. restart your iPhone or 2. completely reset your iPhone and import a backup. It has already solved such inexplicable things for me several times.

  15. Hello, I just found out that HERE we Go is new. Without warning!! Where are my saved routes now?
Or can I start all over again🥴

  16. Hello, I've suddenly had a new version of here we go on my smartphone (1) for about 4.2.300 month, which I can't get along with. You can only choose the fastest or shortest route, whereas in the past I could choose 2-3 different routes. I can't get back to the old version. I only drive offline and have coped well with it so far.
    I really hope for help.

  17. Since HERE became Here weGo, this app has degenerated into a children's playground. People need these unnecessarily playful graphics. The old version was much more pragmatic and professional, so I uninstalled the app.

    1. I see it that way too. It's no longer fun. The support team promised me that a lot would be improved shortly, but you won't notice anything. Even such nonsense as the basic sorting of the collections according to distance is not changed despite promises. I've now ended up at Waze. I still haven't figured out how to choose between different routes, but the routes are good, the displays are excellent and the announcements can be made on the mobile phone. Really recommendable.

    1. Unfortunately, I don't use the app so I can't say if it understands Plus Code, but I guess the chances are slim. :-(

  18. Hallo,
Is there a way to remove or neutralize a short road connection (approx. 500 m), which is used as a sneak route by heavy long-distance traffic. Thanks!

    1. As a rule, roads on a route can be blocked so that they are avoided. But of course that only applies to his own navigation system and does not apply to the navigation devices that the heavy goods vehicle drivers use.

  19. Quite simply: not at all.
It is promised again and again, but nothing happens.
I suspect the app will be discontinued soon.

  20. Maybe it's of interest to one or the other: Unfortunately, you still can't include the current location in a collection. But with the following trick it works: You send the current location to a contact you trust with Whatsapp. If you then tap on this chat (on your own smartphone), Whatsapp asks what it should be opened with. If you select Here WeGo, it will open and - et voilá - you can save the location in a collection. You can then delete the chat.

  21. The current version of Here we Go should also work with Siri via CarPlay. But even on the IPhone 11 with IOS 16.1.1 I can't get Siri to start the navigation with Here we Go. Siri always starts with the Apple Maps app. When I uninstall them, Siri says Navigation not possible, even though I've already started Here we Go manually.

My question: how do you get Siri to start a navigation with Here we Go?

      1. Hi Jens,
it is exactly like that! I spoke to an Apple representative in Ireland this morning who confirmed exactly that. The Apple Maps app is the default and there is no way to change that in the iOS settings. The employee also did not know why the IOS16 manual says the following:

“CarPlay supports certain third-party apps that you download to your iPhone. Compatible apps — like audio, navigation, messaging, voice calling, and vehicle manufacturer apps — automatically appear on the CarPlay home screen and can be controlled with Siri.”

Unfortunately not with Here we go!

  22. Hallo,

With “Here we go”, can you also simply say the address you are looking for, like for example with google maps, or do you have to type it in?

If it should be possible to record it, how can it be set?

    gruß
    Klaus

    1. Very simple: If you have tapped on “Where do you want to go” and the keyboard opens, the microphone symbol appears at the top of the keyboard. At least for me.

      1. Uh, stupid question: Do you think I'm fantasizing? I use the function frequently. Unfortunately, you can't upload a screenshot here...

        1. I don't use the app. If you use it in connection with Here WeGo, then it will probably be possible. Unfortunately I can't contribute my own experience.

        2. Nah, you're not fantasizing! I just noticed that on the IOS version, the microphone can be seen under the keyboard on the right.

  23. Good morning,

some will now - maybe - smile a bit wearily, but I would like to ask my question and hope to get a good answer.

Until last week Saturday I was a very satisfied Windows Phone user ( Nokia Lumia 930, 8.1 ) as far as HERE is concerned, with the following caveat: I entered an address, drove off and a few seconds later my Windows Phone crashed, i.e. switched itself off; This is the first time since I bought the cell phone new. After a few minutes it started up again, everything was there except for the voice output in the navigation system. Maps are still updated, sat nav flawless, but no more voice. Well, you can live with it after you get used to it, but you would still have your voice again. The menu shows Download interrupted, continue ? If I click on the button, I wait until the end of the day, in other words, nothing happens. Is there a way to get the navigation voice back on the cell phone?

I have now activated and set up my unused and brand new Huawei P30 Pro, downloaded it here we go, everything works perfectly. The female voice is a bit too fast and harsh in pronunciation, but you can live with it. Perfect navigation and a tick faster than on the Windows Phone. However, I can't find the Windows Phone installed Here+ for Android anywhere. The lane display is okay, but a bit too big for my liking. However, I have an enormous data consumption on the Android cell phone, wherever. In the Nokia 930 I don't have it by far. Well, shouldn't bother me as far as I have no data limit. Maybe someone has an idea / solution to my questions ( unfortunately a bit much text, sorry ). For me, the Nokia Lumia 930 is/was still the best mobile phone, because it's absolutely uncomplicated and I've never had a problem with it in all those many years, except for the one described above.

    1. Hello Reiner! Unfortunately, I have no idea about Windows Phones and Here we go hasn't been in operation for ages. But as far as I know, they have support. Maybe ask there?

      1. Hello Jens 🙂

That's what I like and appreciate about people like you, when they tell you openly and honestly that you have no idea, knowledge or knowledge about certain things. When I read some commentators in other forums who supposedly give tips and advice, but have no idea about the topic... 🤔

Nevertheless, my thanks also to you and since Peter said that you can forget the support, at least related to the topic, I will put my venerable Nokia Lumia 930 in my private museum, but always keep it charged to create photos, videos etc ... and who knows, maybe the lady with the pleasant voice will come back because the longing for the 930 is great. 😉

        Reiner 🙂

  24. Hi Reiner,
First of all I have to agree with you. The 930 is still a great phone by today's standards. Above all, without advertising. Unfortunately, important apps are now missing. Unfortunately, all attempts to install Android apps on Windows Phone 10 have come to nothing.
Now to your problem. In the HERE settings, section Voice navigation, you can select the language or voice and also download new voices. Have you already tried it?
Here Drive + is not available for Android. It has been replaced by WeGo.
WeGo support has no idea about Drive+. It was a Nokia app and Nokia sold the whole project.

  25. Hi Peter 🙂

That's exactly how it is, beautifully clear and concise, zero advertising, extremely reliable, simply perfect, based on the Nokia Lumia 930. Data hunger very low! Camera for picture and video is top notch for me. Surely the various successors that exist today are a bit better in certain areas, but honestly, who apart from professionals recognizes serious differences? Not me. Today I found out that the female and all other navigation voices have been discontinued in the Microsoft store, but this is no longer accessible, even with good persuasion. That being said I still don't have an explanation as to why the 930 crashed, I'm wondering why everything is back/could be installed but the voices aren't? 🤔 Even the maps for navigation are updated without any problems. 👍

Yes, I've tried everything, the many languages are there, but when I click on download nothing happens because the store is no longer accessible. For me no longer understandable, since everything else works perfectly and the voice is part of it. Well, I don't have to understand politics like that, but politics doesn't matter to the customer.

Too bad HERE+ doesn't exist for Android. It was always useful to turn on the screen, but without navigation and to see how fast you were driving ( the sensor is very accurate ) and especially when driving other routes to quickly see if there are more kilometers than the sat nav or fewer ? It was always very pleasant for me professionally. Last destinations were always good too, although there are some destinations in the Android that I've approached, but I don't know yet whether they will stay there in the long run.

Okay, if the support has no idea how you write, I can save myself the request there. Thanks for the hint. 👍🙂

But today I was really amazed at how many people there are who really miss the 930. The 950 XL is also very much missed, I recently wanted to buy it brand new on Ebay (€ 150,00), but since HERE is not installed there and this is no longer possible, the issue was resolved.

For better or for worse, I now have to make do with the Huawei P 30 Pro, even if the hunger for data in this system is extremely large. But that's another topic again.😉
Nevertheless, thank you for your answer. 👍

    Reiner 🙂

  26. Hi Reiner,
you're right, you can't download other languages anymore. I hadn't tried that yet. A pity. The fact that you can still load maps is because they do not run through the Microsoft Store. I was using Drive+ on a Nokia 640 a while back, but have stopped now because WeGo is really good now. Unfortunately, you cannot adopt the favorites.
You may have to step on WeGo's support team enough times to get the speed displayed without navigation. I also find it very useful. I had already reported some errors to them, which were then also fixed ...
The thirst for data is probably due to the fact that WeGo shows the current traffic in real time. So even short traffic jams and slow-moving traffic.

    1. I don't understand your question. I have no options on my Windows phone (930) or on my Android cell phone. I enter the destination and off we go. Or do you mean Google – Maps? I can't help there, the ads annoy me and it's not as accurate as HERE, so I don't use it.

    2. I think you mean different route variants. You can either tap a track or slide up the screen. Then you will see a description of each route and you can choose one.

  27. Hello, I wanted to ask how can I set the German language to be as loud as English because as soon as I set it to German it comes down really quietly when the music is on when the English language is on. Why is it that I have android 10 on my MIC autoradio mfg Uka

  28. Hallo,
Why is it that the green location dot does not appear when the mobile network is switched off in Here We Go offline (although location is switched on for the app when it is used)?

    1. Jen Kleinholz

This can actually only be due to the fact that the app does not query the location. I don't know how else.

  29. The fact that the location is not queried also seems logical to me. But SIGGI writes that it is switched on. Also, Android would immediately ask Here Wego to access the location. Very strange. I can't reproduce it. Maybe ask Here Support (appsupport@here.com).

  30. Thank you Peter!
As soon as I switch on the cell phone and click online on Here We Go, the location is shown to me. Really very strange. Because what is somewhere in the mountains where there is no cell phone service?!? The location is probably determined by GPS (at least that's what I thought), independent of the radio?
Can I ask the question to the support in German?

    1. The location is mainly determined with GPS and - because GPS is not very accurate - improved with cell phone data. But it has to be activated!
I also had the case that (online) the green dot was missing. Then I tapped on the small circle (bottom right of the map for the location) and then it was there. You might think that your GPS is also switched off in offline mode. But that probably can't be. How does Google Maps behave?
You can contact support in German. I think Here has a branch in Berlin and it goes there automatically.

      1. Hello Peter,
very good tip!!! If I don't get any further, I'll just move to their booth on Invalidenstrasse!
The curious thing is that the location search has worked offline and without a cellular connection a couple of times now. Maybe GPS wasn't available when it didn't work?

        1. Then say hello to Giovanna. She does the support in Berlin.
I think it is very unlikely that GPS is not available. There are apps (e.g. GPS tools) that can be used to display GPS data. And it would also not fit that there is obviously a difference between online and offline. If it's the GPS, it's more likely that your phone is having trouble with it.
          Any insights from Google Maps?

  31. The device is in landscape mode. Here it is in portrait format. How the **** can I change the orientation? It's not fun to type everything sideways.

    1. To rotate the screen on your iPad: Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center. Then tap the Orientation Lock button to make sure it's disabled. Turn your iPad sideways.
