Apple this week has the 2nd generation HomePod presented. The successor to the smart speaker presented in 2018 and discontinued in 2021 comes with different hardware, new sensors and broader functionality. However, the compatibility of the 2023 model with the previous version leaves a lot to be desired. who e.g. For example, if you own a 1st generation HomePod and want to put together a stereo setup, you must either buy the same model (used) or purchase two new 2nd generation HomePods. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the lack of stereo compatibility between the two models is not a hardware limitation, but a marketing idea.
Chapter in this post:
Official HomePod compatibility claims from Apple
In the official press release on the presentation of the new HomePod of the 2nd generation it says: "Users can also connect two HomePod speakers in the same room to form a stereo pair.3 A stereo pair not only separates the left and right channels, it also allows playback on each channel in perfect harmony. This creates a wider, more room-filling sound atmosphere than with conventional stereo speakers for a truly unique listening experience."
The footnote displayed with the small 3 is important. This is particularly important for anyone who wants to put together a stereo setup with two HomePods. Because in footnote 3 of the linked press release it says: "A HomePod stereo pair requires two HomePod speakers of the same model, such as two HomePod mini, two HomePod (2nd generation), or two HomePod (1st generation). So if you want to pair your Apple TV with the manufacturer's smart speakers to get even more sound, then they both have to be the same model.
Auch im data sheet of the new speaker there are corresponding instructions that tend to get lost in the regular product presentation. Because the "Audio technology" section says that the HomePod from 2023 can be used as a stereo speaker, but there is also a footnote. It says again: "A HomePod stereo speaker pair requires two identical HomePod speaker models, such as two HomePod mini, two HomePod (2nd generation), or two HomePod (1st generation)."
So if you want to set up a smart home or at least a home cinema with the Apple speakers, you should pay attention to this limitation.
