With the upgrade to iOS 17 you can now use the standby function on the Apple iPhone. This means that an overview of time, weather and possibly other data and widgets is displayed on the iPhone display when it is oriented horizontally when charging. But when you use iPhone StandBy for the first time, you may immediately notice that the wrong time or the wrong time zone and city are displayed. For me, for example, B. the Californian city Cupertino (CUP) and their time are displayed even though I am in Germany. You can read here what solution I found when the iPhone standby clock goes wrong.
Chapter in this post:
iPhone StandBy: Change time zone to display the correct time
To change the time that the iPhone display shows in standby mode, you don't have to adjust anything in the settings. I tried that and nothing helped. Instead, the city as the starting point of the time to be displayed must be adjusted directly via the standby screen. And it's actually quite easy:
- Hold your finger on the clock until the widget overview opens
- Go to the clock widget in the list and tap it
- Tap the specified city (for me, Cupertino, USA).
- Search for your own city or time zone in the search field and tap the result
- Tap next to the overview with the new city and select “Done” at the top right
Attention: Apparently a new method for iOS 17 and newer!
I just tried the procedure on my iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17 and I couldn't get any further in the widget view. The reason for this is that you have to add a “clock widget” and then scroll far to the right in the list of different clock types that appears below until you end up at “clock + city”. Only with these clock widgets can you define a city with a suitable time.

Hello Emedrano! Thank you back for your visit. 😊
Thank you for the well explained tip.
Thank you very much :-)
Thanks! You are wonderful :0) Greetings from Melbourne!
Hi,
I'm too stupid to change that.
If I tap the clock while on standby, the iPhone wants to be unlocked.
I tap on the arrow at the top right. This is how the world clock opens
Thanks in advance
Hello Toddy! I don't know exactly where you hang. But I tried it out with the latest iOS and iPhone 15 Pro Max and it works. Tap and the arrow appears. And tap there and I can select the location from the world clock list. Do you also have it plugged in and which iOS/iPhone do you have? LG, Jens
Hi Jens,
iPhone 12
iOS 17-2
After clicking on the arrow, the world clock opens, where I already have some places. But clicking doesn't work and selecting doesn't work.
Ok, now I have it: You hold the watch with your finger as described above. Then you come to the widget display and you can also add new widgets here. If you choose “Clock” as the widget, you can swipe back and forth at the bottom and select other clocks and if you are further to the right in the list, “Clock + City” widgets appear. These are clocks for which you can also specify a city. I hope this helps you!
Now it worked, thank you
I suspect that the screen sometimes reacts incorrectly to the finger.
Thank you
Why on earth isn't it standard to show the time set on the phone? Bottom up
So that's how it is for me. But apparently this changes here and there.
