In comparison: Apple TV 4K from 2022 and Apple TV 4K from 2021

Apple this week unveiled its new set-top box, the Apple TV 4K in the 3rd generation, presented. But what has changed compared to its predecessor from 2021? A lot if you look closely. And that's why I've listed the key points of comparison between the 4 Apple TV 2022K and the 4 Apple TV 2021K below. There are significant changes to the main unit as well as the Siri remote. Even the packaging has been given a new design.

The Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen, 2022) on the left and the Apple TV 4K (2nd Gen, 2021) on the right. The smaller dimensions and the lower weight result from the fact that the fan was saved due to a more efficient chip. So the price goes down too.

Comparison of the "Apple TV 4K" versions from 2022 and 2021

In the article linked above on the technical data and further information on the new Apple TV 4K, I already showed you that the set-top box comes with an A15 instead of an A12 chip. According to Apple, this increases efficiency to such an extent that a fan is no longer needed. This hardware difference is also reflected in the weight: a maximum of 214 g instead of 425 g. This also allowed the price to be kept lower. You can find the full comparison in the table below.

Apple TV as a hub for the smart home

The Ethernet version of the new 4rd generation Apple TV 3K with a connection for a LAN cable can also be used as a smart home hub. Thread devices compatible with HomeKit and/or Matter are compatible. Not only can the devices be accessed via the television, but they are also integrated for access while on the move.

The set-top box from Apple can also be used to display multiple camera images and directly select and control devices that are in the vicinity of a called camera (e.g. the outdoor lighting). The device's internal detection of people, animals, vehicles and parcel deliveries can still be used. All information about the new Apple TV 4K can be found in the Official press release.

The new Apple TV 4K will be available on November 4, 2022

You can currently pre-order the new Apple TV 4K with A15 chip, tvOS 16, 4 GB RAM, up to 128 GB memory for multimedia content, apps and games, as well as with HDR10+ support and Siri remote control including a USB-C connection . 1. "There are significant changes to the main unit as well as the Siri remote."

What significant changes are there again exactly on the remote control?

  2. Thread and Matter can already do the 2021 TV 4 K. Those are the key points for me. That's why I'm not exchanging the 2021 model.

  3. Hello, I would only need the Apple TV Box as a hub for Smart Home (Eve Thermo with Thread), can this be done without an Apple TV subscription?
Which Apple TV Box do I need for this?
    Thank you
