The OpenAI API key is your “ticket” to use OpenAI’s GPT-4, GPT-3.5 and other AI models with other websites or apps. For example I use MacGPT, WordGalaxy, GPT for Sheets and some other tools. And you probably ended up here because you were also asked for an OpenAI API key.

The quick guide goes like this: If you already have an OpenAI account, just click on this link and you come directly to the subpage of your account where the API keys are managed.

If you don't have an OpenAI account yet, you can follow the guide below, which will also describe how to do that too.

Step 1: Register with OpenAI

The first step in creating your OpenAI API key is to register with OpenAI. Visit the OpenAI website and click on the “Sign up” button. You will be prompted to enter your email address and create a password.

On the OpenAI website you will find the "Sign up" item at the top right, which you can use to create a free account.

Step 2: Go to “API Keys” in the account

After you have logged in, you can click on the "API Keys" area via your account and see and delete the keys that have already been created. You can also create a new API key using the “Create new secret” button.

In the OpenAI account there is an "API Keys" area in the sidebar.

Step 3: Create the API Key

On the following page you will find the point “Create new secret key”. This secret key is the API key that you will be asked for elsewhere.

In the area of API key management, you can create a new "Secret" and thus receive a new API key.

Step 4: Use your API Key

Now that you have your API Key, you can use it to make requests to the OpenAI API via other tools. Make sure you keep your key safe and don't share it with others, otherwise other people with the key can use GPT at your expense.

Here you can see the new API key, which I have made unrecognizable.

Conclusion

Creating an OpenAI API Key is a simple process that gives you access to OpenAI's powerful AI models. With your API Key, you can use the OpenAI API to do a variety of tasks, from text generation to translation and more.

I've been thinking about making an account like this. But then I got to the point where OpenAI wanted my mobile number, and that put me off after all. What do they need that for? I suppose there is no way to make the account WITHOUT the mobile number, right?

Hello Martin! I think people like to ask for the mobile number to prevent people from creating 20 or more accounts to do nonsense with them. With the query of the mobile number you have already limited that a bit. It could also be that there are other reasons. I don't think they advertise it or anything. In any case, I have not received any advertising on my cell phone number.

Hello Jens, thanks for your answer. That makes me feel positive if you haven't experienced any negative effects so far. I'm generally cautious, especially when giving out my mobile number (bad experiences). I'll think about making an account after all, because playing around with OpenAI is definitely appealing!

You can also try using a disposable SMS number. These are public numbers that you can use... you can then see the SMS on the website and then you have your account. I think you need to search for "temporary phone number" or something. You will then find relevant offers.
