iOS 16 tip: Show battery charge status in the battery icon (and which models it doesn't work on)

One of the small changes that comes with the iPhone Upgrading to iOS 16 resulted in the ability to display the battery charge status as a percentage in the battery icon in the status bar. Or to put it briefly: The battery symbol at the top right gets a number. If, like me, you always want to know what percentage of battery your iPhone still has, then you can read here how to activate this number. There is also iPhones compatible with iOS 16that lack this feature. It is possible that Apple left it out because the display was too small. However, more details are not known.

If the iPhone battery charge percentage is to be displayed permanently, this can be set from iOS 16 onwards. However, Apple has not introduced this innovation on all compatible iPhones.

iPhone setting: Show battery charge status in the battery icon

If you want to see a percentage of how much battery capacity is left directly in the status bar of the Apple iPhone at the top right, simply follow the step-by-step instructions below. Then all you have to do is tap the right part of the display a few times and you can read the percentage of the iPhone's battery charge level in the battery symbol in the status bar:

  1. Opens the Settings on the iPhone with iOS 16
  2. Tap on the point Battery in the list that appears
  3. Activates the slider at "Battery charge in %"
The slider for "Battery charge in %" can be found in the settings in the battery menu.

Battery charge % is missing on these iPhone models despite iOS 16

There are several Apple iPhone models that are compatible with iOS 16 but don't get all the new features and settings. The display of the battery charge level in percent on the battery icon at the top right is e.g. B. not possible on these iPhones:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 12mini
  • iPhone 13mini

Apple shows this explicitly in an update of support document HT201102 (English / German) on. However, the reasons for the lack of the function are kept secret. As suggested above, it could be a space issue or a concern that the display is too small to read properly. Maybe it's all for performance reasons.

  1. Can it be that the switch shows no reaction when used on an iPhone 13 Pro Max and always stays active? Thats how it is for me at least.

    1. It may well be that this display is set as the default on some models. Maybe it's a bug that will be fixed with an update. Currently I would suggest restarting the device and then trying again.

      Best regards

      1. Hi John,

First, thanks for the quick response!
And I've already done the tip about restarting at least 3 times, without success ;). I've also tried turning the switch to "Off" and then trying a restart, but the same result.
But as far as I've seen in other forums so far, there are other users who have the same problem. But also don't have a solution for this :(.
Hope it's really "just" a bug and it will be fixed soon. The ad doesn't bother me that much, but I would have liked to have decided for myself what the ad looked like ;).
Maybe you (or another user) will find an answer. Thank you for this in advance :)!

  2. This percentage display of the battery has existed before. I remember being disappointed because it went away with some iOS update and is only in the
    Dashboard was displayed.

      1. Hi Jens,
That was one of my first shots I did. Otherwise, my 14 Pro inspires me more and more. All the apps from my XS were there on the sls icon and could be installed with a simple tap. Activating my PhotoTan, for example, went quickly. WhatsApp was also easy to reactivate. Restoring my last chats from iCloud storage from 8.9.22/11/XNUMX took longer as this also had to be synced with my WhatsApp web app on my WinXNUMX PC. Some chat content was lost, but that was tolerable. For example, very large emojis that can only be saved in favorites on the iPhone with a fingertip. But my buddy is sending them again. This morning all chats from the save were back. I am now also somewhat familiar with the Dynamic Island and Always On.

        Kind regards, Horst

        1. Hello Horst! I'm glad you're happy with the 14 Pro. I would also like to try it, but unfortunately I have to wait... And of course you can save my contact details. Kind regards, Jens
