A message just came in from a reader who apparently has a problem with the call list in the iPhone, which has only been occurring since iOS 16:
Telephone calls that are definitely only received from one person are displayed as a group in the call list. If you now press one of the numbers in the group, the iPhone starts a group call and calls the other numbers as well.
Unfortunately I can't show you a screenshot of this problem as I don't have it on my iPhone, but I think you'll know the problem if you have it.
It's amazing how many people have reported the same issue on the Apple support page. Fortunately, there was also someone who found a solution, which unfortunately involves deleting your call list (i.e. the history) completely and then restarting the iPhone.
Here are the instructions in individual steps:
Open the Phone app, then tap Call History to view a list of recent calls.
Tap Edit at the top.
Delete your entire call history or a specific call. To clear the entire log, tap Clear, then tap Clear All Calls. To delete a single call, tap the red minus button, then tap Delete.
Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power off slider appears.
Swipe the Power off slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.
For most people, the problem with the group calls was then solved. It seems obviously a bug in iOS 16 which will hopefully be fixed soon so you don't lose your entire call history.
