Put iPhone without home button in DFU mode (X / XS (Max) / XR)

The DFU mode on the Apple iPhone describes the device status for a Device Firmware Update. In this mode it is possible to upload an older firmware, an old backup or, for example, SHSH data. It is also possible to restore an iPhone in this maintenance mode that was "destroyed" by a jailbreak. You can read how to get there with older models of Apple smartphones in the Instructions linked here. The steps described below are for the iPhone without a home button on the front. With it you can put an iPhone X, Xs, Xs Max, XR and upcoming models in DFU mode.

Activate DFU mode on the iPhone X / XS and XR without a home button - you can do this with the step-by-step instructions here.

Please remember that an Apple Mac or Windows PC with iTunes and an active internet connection should be available for installing new firmware or resetting the iPhone in maintenance mode. If this is the case, you proceed as follows to be able to reinstall a backup or a fresh firmware via iTunes:

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer using the Lightning USB cable
  2. Launch iTunes and make sure the iPhone is recognized
  3. Briefly press Volume Up (top left)
  4. Briefly press Volume Down (bottom left)
  5. Hold down the power button (right) for 10 seconds; The display should turn black
  6. Continue to press the power button and also hold down Volume Down
  7. Release the power button after 5 seconds, but keep Volume Down pressed for another 10 seconds
  8. After a successful process, iTunes will show on the computer that the iPhone is now in DFU mode or maintenance mode
  9. The iTunes logo should also appear on the iPhone (it may also remain black)
  10. If the iPhone restarts and the Apple logo appears, then try again

Exit DFU mode on iPhone X, XS and XR

If you want to exit DFU mode on an iPhone without a home button, then simply carry out a firmware update or a firmware change successfully. Because afterwards the iPhone will restart automatically. If you started the maintenance mode accidentally or out of curiosity or if the maintenance does not work, you can also exit the DFU mode manually: Simply press the side button (right) and the volume down button (bottom left).
