Chapter in this post:
I got mine at the weekend Apple MacBook Pro 16 " to "M1 Pro" chip Bought it and while setting it up I noticed a few key differences to the MacBook Pro from 2012. Of course they are, there are nine years and several operating systems between the laptop versions. One of the first things that gave me a headache was the MacBook Pro's keyboard backlight. There are no longer any function keys for setting them. After a short search in the macOS menu bar, this was no longer a problem. And the system settings have even more cool features ready...
As I said, I switched from a 2012 model to a 2021 MacBook Pro. The device turned on as soon as it was opened, which surprised me at first. After a little research, I found out that this has been happening since the Apple laptops of 2016. But now to the keys: they also beamed directly at me. So I looked for customization options on the F5 and F6 function keys. But there's a microphone and a crescent moon. So first I completed the setup, migrated the data from the old MacBook, and then looked around the system.
I finally found what I was looking for in control center from macOS 12 Monterey. This offers the field "Keyboard brightness" in the top right of the menu bar, which also shows the well-known symbol of the corresponding function key in addition to this name. If you click on it, a slider appears with which you can adjust the keyboard brightness on the MacBook. You can fine-tune the illumination of the keys to illuminate them just a bit in darker environments and completely in broad daylight. And this is what it looks like when you try it out:
Searching for keyboard backlight settings MacBook Pro from 2021 also took me to System Preferences (Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard). Additional features can be activated there. For example, you can check "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" or "Turn off keyboard backlight after x seconds". If you put a tick there, you can choose between 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute and 5 minutes. A good option if you B. watches videos in the evening and wants to see the buttons for searching on YouTube, but then only wants the screen to light up.
