Control the Keynote presentation with the iPhone: Here's how!

If you have prepared a Keynote presentation on your Mac, you don't have to click through the slides with the mouse during the presentation. If you want to move freely during your presentation, you don't need a Bluetooth remote control or the like. You can easily control the Keynote presentation with the iPhone via "Keynote Remote". All you need is an Apple computer with Keynote 6 or newer and an iPhone / iPad / iPod touch with Keynote 2.1 or newer. However, the current version on all devices is 10.3.9 - so you don't have to perform an update;)

With Keynote Remote you can control a Mac presentation via iPhone. You can find out how to use your Apple smartphone as a remote control for your computer here.

Keynote Remote: Control the Keynote presentation with the iPhone

The second part of the name already suggests the “Keynote Remote” feature: the iPhone becomes a remote control. You can not only click through the slides with your mobile device, you can also view them directly on the display. You also have access to the notes created in the presentation. So you never have to turn around to read what's on the wall: D

If you want to control your Keynote presentation created on your Mac, iMac or MacBook with your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, then proceed as follows:

  1. Both on the Mac and on the mobile device Wifi activate
  2. Open the Keynote app on the Apple computer
  3. In the menu bar Keynote and then on Settings ... here
  4. The rider Remotes choose

Use Keynote on Mac with iPhone: Screenshots

I tried the above guide to test the procedure and it worked. Accordingly, you can find the screenshots of the MacBook Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro here. It worked with this combination; But it should also do that with other device combinations. Even if you only use an old Apple smartphone for Keynote control.

First you have to activate the use of remote controls in Keynote on the Apple Mac. After the procedure on the iPhone, it will be displayed in the device list.

Useful features: Show next slide or notes, highlight content

In addition to starting and switching presentation slides, Keynote Remote offers other useful features. So you can have the next slide shown next to the current slide directly on the mobile device display. This allows you to make transitions in your presentation more fluid and to continue at the right moment. You can also display your notes that you have created for the current slide. Then you don't have to carry notes with you in addition to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Show notes, show the current and next slide or use other display options - all this and much more is also possible in landscape format;)

This is still particularly useful with Keynote Remote Highlighter-Tool. You can find this at the top of the screen during the presentation; it looks like a pen that is being circled around something. If you tap on it, you can either underline something, write something on the foil (with your finger, so it is quite streaky) and even use a kind of laser pointer. To do this, you simply use your finger on the mobile device display. A virtual laser point is then displayed at the selected location on the presentation from the Mac.

Here you can see the layout selection in portrait format, the marking feature and the tool that serves as a laser pointer on the Mac presentation.

Keynote Remote: More information about the remote control function

By the way, you can use Keynote Remote not only from the iPhone on the Mac, but also on other iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. In this way, presentations created on the mobile device can be controlled with another mobile device. Here, too, the use of remote controls must first be accepted on the presentation device and then the function must be selected on the remote device. Further details and useful information can be found in the Apple support document HT204378. This is also the source for the instructions detailed above. Good luck with your project!
