Lego Mindstorms EV3 is a constant topic at Apfelot and it is since 2014; counselors keep coming back to the right USB cableTo Books and instructions as well as on many other topics - and so today it's about the choice between AA batteries, AA batteries and the battery module for the Lego EV3 Brick. Even looking for the right electricity supplier for the robotics set can be worthwhile when you come to the appearance of Lego Boost who might want to purchase the EV3 sets, which are going down in price;)
Chapter in this post:
AA rechargeable batteries or AA batteries for the Lego EV3 Brick?
I think the question of rechargeable batteries or batteries is often a subjective one. Of course, batteries are better for the environment and you already get many with a lot of power from 2.100 mAh to 2.500 mAh up to 2.600 mAh. However, those who shy away from the higher acquisition costs of rechargeable batteries and charger (which are put into perspective in their use) will mostly use batteries - although the “good ones” are not cheap either. If you look in Lego Mindstorms forums um, then you can see a trend towards AA batteries; The black eneloop pro from Panasonic (until 2009 from Sanyo) are recommended. These are Ni-MH batteries with 2.500 mAh, which are not that expensive in a pack of 4. From experience the right Technoline BC 700 charger with Delta U and individual shaft monitoring as well as discharge function and battery defect detection should also be recommended here:
- eneloop pro batteries are pre-charged with solar power and can therefore be used immediately. They are suitable for devices with medium ...
- Rechargeable up to 500 times - this protects the environment and your wallet
- eneloop pro batteries have an extremely low self-discharge and are therefore always ready for use. Even after 1 year ...
- Universal charger for rechargeable batteries LR06 and LR03 Ni-MH (Nickel Metal-Hybrid - NiMH) or Nicad...
- The charge of each battery is individually controlled by a microprocessor for voltage, current and temperature.
- Active temperature protection and automatic reverse polarity detection
Lego Education EV3 battery module and charger: pros and cons
The Lego battery module is of course specially made for the EV3 Brick, which is an advantage per se. It brings the right voltage, the pins for ideal connectivity, and so on. It can also be charged during operation using the charger. With mobile robots this is of course useless, but with stationary models it is quite practical. The EV3 battery module has a few disadvantages along with all the advantages: it protrudes a bit from the brick, the acquisition costs are high and the charger has to be purchased separately:
- MINDSTORMS Education
- Education EV3
- Battery module 45501
- Power supply for LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3 battery module (45501), LEGO Power Functions battery (8878)
- Replaces: PS-593-01
- Connector dimensions: Mating depth: 12mm
Conclusion on the choice of batteries, accumulators or accumulator modules for the EV3 Brick
It can be said that rechargeable batteries are the better alternative. In terms of environmental technology, lifespan, etc. In addition, the higher acquisition costs are put into perspective in the longer term if you compare them with the costs for AA batteries in the same, longer period of time. The same can be said of the EV3 battery module, but from a financial perspective (especially with the extra charger) it is another house number - but it is also made directly for the brick. So in the end everyone has to decide for themselves ...
Personally, I only use batteries for all devices and switch between the Amazon Basic batteries and the Eneloop models. Both work great with the EV3 Brick and last for weeks. With most models, it is not that easy to get to the brick if you just want to change batteries - the Lego battery would have clear advantages here because you can charge it in the model - but with the battery life that the AA- Batteries currently deliver, you rarely have to install new batteries. So my recommendation would be to use AA batteries.
