M2 iPad Air teardown – iFixit shows the inside and assesses repairability

After the other day the M4 iPad Pro was taken apart, is now also recently introduced by Apple M2 iPad Air your turn. There is also a video for this, in which, in addition to the dismantling, a few interesting X-ray images are shown and additional information is shared. Below I have summarized the most important data for you.

In the M2 iPad Air teardown from iFixit, numerous components of the tablet and their connection to each other and to the housing can be seen. The assessment of repairability is not good. Image: iFixit / YouTube

Not easy to open, battery relatively easy to replace

In order to get to the inside of the iPad Air (and other iPad models), the edges of the display must be heated so that the adhesive underneath softens. But even then, getting the display removed in one piece is a delicate matter. But once it's done and the connections to the cables to which it is connected are separated, then the display can be put aside to concentrate on the hardware in the iPad Air's housing.

In order to remove the two battery cells, the adhesive strips underneath must be pulled out. While this looks pretty easy in the iFixit video (if you have enough patience), it does point out that the adhesive strips become more stubborn over time and are harder to remove - after all, they are constantly exposed to temperature fluctuations caused by iPad use and exposed to charging the battery.

Removal of logic board, speakers and cameras

Many cables and connectors follow during further dismantling. It also shows that the magnets for attaching the Apple Pencil are now further apart. The positioning of the FaceTime camera between them is given as a possible reason. The fact that the logic board is glued quite tightly to the case shouldn't be a problem for standard repairs. However, if one of its components breaks down, it must be completely replaced - updates or even chip upgrades on a modular basis are not possible.

The two speakers of the new M2 iPad Air are noticeably larger than those of its predecessor. However, they cannot be removed and replaced entirely. Because the driver magnets are incorporated into the housing. The camera, on the other hand, appears to be easier to remove and, if necessary, replace. The FaceTime camera offers less hardware compared to the iPad Pro, which is interesting. This indicates fewer features, which are certainly reflected in the possibilities of iPadOS and apps when used.

The repairability of the Apple iPad Air (2024) is 3 out of 10

The Apple tablet is still not a device that can be easily repaired. Due to the battery cells being relatively easy to remove, it gets a gracious 3 out of 10 points on the repairability scale. But the mere fact that the device is difficult to open and then only reassembled with special glue raises doubts as to whether a layperson can do it properly at home. What also factors into the rating: Apple does not offer any instructions or spare parts, and will probably not do so quickly for the current iPads.
