macOS 14.4.1 – Solutions for several issues now available!

With the Mac update to macOS 14.4.1, Apple has released the solutions to several problems caused by the last update (to version 14.4). These can affect the use of certain software, but also connected hardware. In this article you will find the changes that come with macOS 14.4.1. So if you have previously skipped version 14.4 due to negative reports, the current bug fix could resolve your concerns.

Problems solved on the Apple Mac with macOS 14.4.1

There are several problems that, according to the official changelog should be solved with macOS 14.4.1. Here is the translated summary with a few additional notes:

  • USB hubs connected via the ports of an external display were not recognized. Now they are recognized again, which should avoid annoying replugging.
  • Copy-protected audio units, i.e. plugins for Apple's Core Audio technology, could not be validated under macOS 14.4. This was a disaster for professional audio work, such as music creation. Everything should work normally again under 14.4.1.
  • Apps containing Java crashed unexpectedly. If individual Java apps continue to crash, it should no longer be the operating system, but the app. In this case you would have to contact the developers.

Other macOS quirks that are unclear how to fix

In addition to the macOS 14.4 quirks mentioned above and recognized by Apple through the bug fix update, there have been even more problem reports in the last few days and weeks. It is unclear whether these were taken into account and corrected. For example, there were the following descriptions:

  • File versions are lost, especially those in iCloud Drive that are shared with others (already described on Friday). File versions are past memory images of documents that make it possible to access deleted content again even after extensive editing - more about that here.
  • There was a report on Reddit that a user could no longer connect his Thunderbolt 4 dock to the Mac. Unfortunately, it is not known which manufacturer and model it is.

Should you install the new macOS update or not?

You should definitely install such small updates. Because they only serve to fix errors and eliminate problems. Since they do not provide any new functions, no additional errors can creep in. Therefore, it is particularly advisable to install macOS 14.4.1 if you have already installed the update to macOS 14.4.

And since two security updates for CoreMedia and WebRTC are also included, the update can be recommended doubly (Which). If you want to be sure that nothing bad happens and that you can switch back to the previously used version if errors occur, create a backup of the current system. This can be uploaded to return to the previous state.

How do I install the macOS 14.4.1 update?

You can find the option to install manually in the Mac system settings. To do this, simply click on it in the menu bar at the top left Apple logo, in its menu System settings ... and there in the left column General. Now you choose right software update out of. The Mac may need to briefly check whether an update is available. Afterwards you should see macOS 14.4.1 and be able to click the “Update Now” button.
