Chapter in this post:
MediathekView is an app for Mac, Windows and Linux with which you can browse the media libraries of ARD, ZDF, Arte, 3Sat, the "third" stations and the like. Various filters can be used to find exactly what you are looking for. So whether you are looking for a special episode of a program or want to watch a documentary on a certain topic - you will not only find the right content here, you can even download it directly. You can find information about the MediathekView Mac app, downloading, installing and using it in this post.
Abbreviation: Click here to go directly to the website of the offer
When you start the MediathekView app for the first time, you will be asked to enter your location so that the available or unavailable content of the media libraries can be displayed accordingly. You can choose from Germany (DE), Switzerland (CH), Austria (AT), EBU - European Broadcasting Union (EU) and others. After completing the setup - with default settings or manual process - you're ready to go.
Use the search bar at the top right to search for keywords. In the example shown below, I searched for “Steve Jobs”. The MediathekView app found five offers on the Mac: two from Arte Germany, two from Arte France and one from ZDFinfo. In addition to the station and title, the overview shows the release date, the duration of the programs / contributions, the size for the download and, if applicable, other metadata.
If you double-click on a title, you will be presented with further information - such as whether there is a high-definition version (HQ), whether subtitles are available, and so on. There is also a description, a kind of small blurb, which goes into more detail about the content of the selected program. What did not work in my short test was playback via the play button. But that can be solved by clicking on the link to the media library. However, the download function worked (see below).
If you are looking for specific content, I recommend you click on the individual column titles of the results overview. For example, if you click on "Sender", the stations will be sorted in alphabetical order. So if you know that the content you are looking for comes from 3Sat or Arte, it will now appear further up. The same applies to content with an A at the beginning, if you can sort the titles by clicking on the corresponding column header.
As already shown above, with the MediathekView app under macOS on the Apple Mac, on the Windows PC and on the Linux machine, you not only have the option of looking for programs, documentaries and contributions from public broadcasters. These can also be downloaded from the media library via the app so that you can store them locally on the hard drive and later view them offline. The rider is practical Downloads in the app, which leads to the download overview and administration.
By the way, if you click on the play button of a downloaded content in the download overview, it will be started locally. On the Apple Mac, the macOS opens QuickTime Playerto play the downloaded video. Under Windows and Linux there will certainly also be standard software that is used for the playback function from the MediathekView app.
The MediathekView download is free of charge and can be accessed via the official website of the developers will be realized. In addition to the finished download for various operating systems, there you will also find the link to GitHub, where you can find the source code and the individual resources of the program. This gives you the opportunity to download the app for your own editing and customization.
If you don't want to download an app on your computer or use the offer on mobile devices with iOS, iPadOS or Android, you can still click on the page linked above. Because there is the menu item "Web Client". This leads you to a simple search mask in which you can search through the content of the public broadcasters for keywords. However, some information and functions, such as download management, are of course missing.
Did I forgot something? Have I overlooked an important function of the software? Or do you want to share your experiences with me? Then leave a comment;)
