MeterStats – keep an eye on energy and water consumption on the iPhone

Alexander Käßner's iPhone app MeterStats is now available in the App Store. With MeterStats meter readings can be noted and compared. In this way, the consumption of electricity, heating and water connections can be observed. The trends in consumption are calculated automatically and displayed both as percentages and in the form of diagrams. It is also very well thought out that certain incidents can be noted - vacations, visits, change of provider, etc. In this way, reasons for consumption and cost changes can be determined. At the start, the app is only available in English, but Alexander informed us that the German translation should be implemented soon.

Abbreviation: You can go directly to the App Store here

With MeterStats you can keep an eye on the meter readings for electricity, heating and water. Whether more or less than before was consumed is automatically calculated and displayed. Events can also be stored to track major changes.

MeterStats helps to keep track of energy and water consumption

The app called "MeterStats - Energy Tracker" in the App Store is the latest project by developer Alexander Käßner from Berlin. Among other things, he previously worked on “diagrams', a Mac app you can read about Setapp can obtain. And the iPad main menu, which he designed as part of his bachelor thesis, is also impressive.

In the development of MeterStats, not only was a good idea used, but also the necessary knowledge and skills to implement it. The MeterStats app makes it possible to note the consumption of electricity, water and heating at a glance and to read developments. The graphical presentation is easy to understand and offers interesting insights in various tabs.

The app is written entirely in Apple's programming language Swift and uses the new Swift Charts Framework to illustrate the stored counter values. This means that changes in consumption can be viewed in a very short time. So if you want to save electricity, water, heating and, last but not least, money, you can secure this tool for it. The basic version is free of charge - there is a subscription model for several locations / properties and a greater insight into the data evaluation.

The paid version of the app, called “MeterStats+”, costs either €1,19 per month or €11,99 per year. But trying out and using the basic functions is permanently free of charge. So you don't necessarily have to spend something to be able to save elsewhere. You can find more information, current information on the features of the app and more in the iPhone App Store.

Sophisticated app for reducing consumption and costs

Noting meter readings and having the data displayed graphically is one thing. But drawing the right conclusions and reducing consumption in a targeted manner is another. Here you need a plan and the documentation of certain milestones. And for that, as well as for tracking outliers in the consumption statistics, there is the Events tab. As already mentioned at the beginning, changes in use can be noted here – vacations cause almost no consumption; Visits result in increased consumption.

All stored meters can be viewed at a glance in the Meters tab. In addition, the last consumption level entered is displayed, including the time that has passed since then. So you can see directly when it is necessary to go to the meter again. Incidentally, the overview also shows directly the percentage by which consumption has increased or decreased compared to the last comparison period. Incidentally, different units can be selected for different regions and meters - so for water consumption, in addition to m³, liters, gal, and ft³.

Technical specifications of the MeterStats app

The MeterStats app is for iPhones with iOS 16.1 or newer made. It can be emulated on an Apple Mac with M1 or newer starting with macOS 13 Ventura. The download is only 3 MB in size and the basic version is free. At the start, the app is only available in English. If you find it attractive and useful, you can also download it if you prefer to use it in German. Not only is the app intuitive to use, regardless of the language, Alexander also said to our request for the German translation: "It's actually right at the top of my roadmap!".

  1. Many such apps are currently coming out, some free, some one-time price, others subscription.
    I am currently using EHW+.

    1. ... or you can use Numbers for ios (Numbers/Excel/LibreOffice or similar on mac) and is even more flexible with it...

      (_all this just rip off!_)
