Mp3tag - Official Mac release in the App Store

After more than 20 years of development and support for the Windows version of Mp3tag the app is now officially coming to the Mac App Store for the first time. Before that, she could already can be used via emulation under macOS, but only as a Windows version. Mp3tag for the Mac comes from Florian Heidenreich from Dresden, who started development in 2017. In this article I have summarized what the software can do for 21,99 euros and under which macOS versions you can use it. By the way, you come to the official website with this link.

From today you can find the first official Mp3tag version for the Mac in the App Store. In this post you get all information about the newly programmed macOS version.
From today you can find the first official Mp3tag version for the Mac in the App Store. In this post you get all information about the newly programmed macOS version.

Mp3tag for the Mac

The first official Mac version of Mp3tag is compatible with macOS Mojave 10.14.6 as well as all newer versions (Catalina and Big Sur). In addition, the app is optimized for the "Apple Silicon", ie currently for the M1 chip in the latest MacBook and Mac mini models.

The first alpha was released in May 2020 and the beta appeared in December 2020. Today, February 18, 2021, the final 1.0 version will be released, which you can view and buy in the Mac App Store. You come to the app page with screenshots, a feature overview and further information via this link.

Change tags of audio and video files on the Mac

With the named app you can change the tags, i.e. the properties and information of a file, which go beyond its audio or video content. For example, you can enter or change the title of the album, the artist, the release year, the track number, the genre, the CD number and the album cover.

This can be done individually, i.e. title by title, or in batch processing. So you don't have to assign the same artist to dozens of songs individually or add the album cover again and again. With the batch processing you save a lot of time. The same applies to music as well as video files, for example in the mp4-Format.

More than just mp3: These file formats are supported

The program is called "Mp3tag", but besides mp3 files it can edit some other audio formats and even video data. For example, you can specify the title, album, year, genre, etc. for files in these formats:

  • MP4 / M4A / M4V
  • FLAC
  • OGG
  • OPUS
  • Aif
  • DSF
  • MPC
  • WAV

Not just manual input: metadata transfer from the web

Is it too difficult for you to enter all the information yourself, or maybe you don't even know which data go with the files? This is not a problem. Because Mp3tag on the Mac supports the metadata query for media files from the Internet. You may already know this comparison of album information from iTunes, the music app or Windows Media Player.

You can also take file information from the file name or, conversely, use the tags of a file to form its name. This can pay off when cataloging songs in a single folder. Whatever you want to do with the tags of music and video files, Mp3tag for Mac will most likely be faster.

Mp3tag Download for macOS

You can no longer find the Mp3tag download for macOS as a Wine emulation on the previous website for the Windows version of the program. As of today, the native Mac version of Mp3tag for macOS Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur is available in the Mac App Store. The one-time price for the full version is 21,99 euros. Have fun with it :)
