Mac app "Office Reset" fixes problems with Microsoft Office

Solving problems with Microsoft Office on the Apple Mac is not that easy. Does the activation go wrong, are there missing functions in the program windows or do Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Co. keep freezing? Then you can either carry out a laborious reinstallation with previous (sometimes manual) removal of all possible folders and files - or else Office reset use. The Mac app is from Paul Bowden, a developer at Microsoft. He offers the tool free of charge to solve possible / frequent errors in the office software on the Apple computer. I have summarized all the details, information on compatibility and more below.

Important note: Backup before execution!

The program seems to help in many cases, but one reader wrote to me that running Office Reset wiped out all of his Outlook mail traffic for many years. Other things like file shares and the like are gone too. So it would be a good idea to make a full backup of the system before running it so that you can restore the data in case of an emergency.

Update 05.09.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX: the correct operation of Office Reset

The developer of Office Reset, Paul Bowden, has just spoken in the comments, as the question arose here of where to find the program after "installing". The solution to the riddle is simple: It is not an installer and you work with the program almost immediately. To do this, select the corresponding checkboxes and then start the execution of the script.

TL; DR: You can go directly to the app website here

Are you new to this abbreviation? Here is TL; DR explained, because it occurs more often in the blog ... ;-)

Perform a reset in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or another MS Office app, uninstall everything or completely reset it - this can be done with Paul Bowden's Mac tool Office Reset. Office Reset is free to download. (Image source: office-reset.com)

Office reset download for the Apple Mac

You can find the free Office-Reset download directly from the developer Paul Bowden with this link. This takes you to the official website, where you can find the secure download and an FAQ with questions and answers about the program and its use as well as application examples and information for Mac admins. Why you should only download such Mac tools and other software, if they are not available in the Mac App Store, from the official developer page, I have explained to you here: Why you shouldn't download software from download portals. Use Office 2019 and enthusiastically welcome this tool - unfortunately my problem is not listed. For me, the updater gives me the message that 80 percent of all updates could not be installed because of an error.
Does anyone else have this problem or ideas for eliminating it? Thx in advance!

Unfortunately I have no idea. But the mistake is probably programmed in, because you finally get soft and book Office 365. : D

      • JNR says:

Terrible program! Erased my entire Mac Outlook - saved files, access, everything. I've been using Outlook for 15 years - and this download managed to destroy it in 5 minutes. I am very sorry that I ever heard about this program.

        • Jen Kleinholz says:

Hello JNR! Thank you for your feedback signal. I'm going to include this directly as a warning in the article so people make a backup beforehand. For some people, the program actually helps, but one should be aware of the risk.

    • Paul Bowden says:

@OnSmash - use the 'Reset AutoUpdate' function in the tool to solve this problem.

Such a day, as beautiful as this one!
I know why I keep visiting your blog and why I have the app on my iPhone - you always find something special. You seem like the truffle pig of productivity when it comes to Apple.
I had somehow lost my office, couldn't see my 'last used open', there was a yawning emptiness (and I already had a question on the subject. Had to set everything up again, that was too difficult, complicated for me.

Et voila: read the article, click on the link, skim through the website, download - and my problems are solved in just under 5 minutes.

I wish you a weekend that is at least twice as good as I will have it now!

PS: Do you actually have a coffee mug or beer mug where you can't drink with you, but where you can get a drink of your choice financially?

    • sir appleot says:

Hello wolf! According to this comment, my weekend is 4x as nice! : D Thank you very much for the praise. I've always wanted to make a Sir-Apfelot coffee cup, but somehow I can't get the time to do it. But you can use the PayPal service "Buy me a coffee" throw a little something in my coffee cup if you like.

  3. Düding Frank says:

I installed the program but cannot find it on the MacBook.
    What am I doing wrong?
I'm new here and the site helps me get on better with Apple.
    not bad
    Greetings Frank

    • sir appleot says:

Hello Frank! Start the Spotlight search with CMD + space bar. If you enter "Office Reset" there, he should actually find the file.

    • Paul Bowden says:

Hi Frank, the download doesn't actually install anything on your MacBook. When you run the PKG file, you should see the reset options. Simply check the boxes, and then this will run the scripts necessary to fix the problem.

  4. Marco says:

It doesn't always have to be an app. From the author (Paul Bowden) there is also a script on GITUB with which this can be solved from the command line. Use this from time to time if the Teams plug-in causes problems in Outlook again.

  5. Paul Bowden says:

Thank you Sir Apfelot for publishing this article!

  6. Frank says:

    Thank you for your answers,
I now understand how it works.
    Have a nice weekend

  7. Olaf says:

Once again I didn't read everything and used the tool on Office 2011.
Office is still there, but every time you start one of the programs, you are asked for auto-update and MS support (+ the template window + an empty document).
    A backup didn't help.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get rid of that?

    • sir appleot says:

Hello Olaf! Damn. :( Do you have the exact wording of the message? Then it would be easier for me to search the Google Glass Balls.: D

      • Olaf says:

Sorry I missed your answer (no email notification?)

Each time an office program is restarted, the following window appears:
        Title: Helping MS Office Improve
        1. Query: Keep Office for Mac up to date? Yes No
Question 2: Do you participate in the usability improvement program? Yes No

next window after selection and next_
Congratulation! You are now ready to use Office for Mac.

Then comes the selection window for the respective templates.

        Reinstalling Office did not help.

        • Jen Kleinholz says:

Hello Olaf! I assume he cannot save this information. Probably because the file in question is corrupt. So either with the tool App Cleaner remove everything from Office or go the manual way: Finder> key combination CTRL + SHIFT + L (to get to the library)> Preferences> then throw out everything in the folder that starts with "com.microsoft". Then restart your Mac and try again. Maybe it works ...

  8. Guido says:

Excellent! Microsoft Office Reset (.pkg) by Paul Bowden also helped me on Monterey 12.3.1 with Office 16.60! Perfect!

  9. Nicole says:

OMG thanks!!! I was hesitant to download Office Reset because it sounded too good to be true (and the "nothing comes for free" worry) - but then I decided to believe in the good in people and voila - it worked , and I can continue working on my novel. Thank you :)

  10. I also now had the problem that Outlook was deleted because it.
It's now 0kb and in the autoupdater app it gave me an error when I tried to update outlook. After re-running the office reset using the Reset Auto-Update feature, I no longer saw Outlook in the update app.
