The Olloclip lens system has already been well received for the iPhone 4 and has won some fans who have been waiting for the new version for the iPhone 5. And the wait was worth it! The 3-in-1 lens system combines a fisheye lens, a wide-angle lens and a macro lens in one. In contrast to competing systems, which work with a small metal ring that has to be stuck around the iPhone's camera lens so that the lenses can be attached to the iPhone using magnets, the Olloclip system works with a simple attachment that is attached to the iPhone and so that it can be removed quickly and cleanly from the iPhone.

Processing of the Olloclip lenses

The new Olloclip system, with its aluminum housing and real glass lenses, offers a very high quality of workmanship. The lens system looks valuable and is custom-made for the thickness of the iPhone 5. You could have problems with the accuracy of fit when using a screen protector. This can possibly be pressed in from the side when attaching the Olloclip. In any case, you cannot work with covers or similar accessories if the Olloclip is to be used. These must then be removed in order to use the lens system.

In relation to the small optics and the price, the lenses are well made. But if you expect a quality from the photos that you know from magazines, you may be disappointed with the Olloclip. High-quality macro shots or fisheye photos can only be made with single-lens reflex cameras and lenses that cost 500 euros and more for a lens. With the Olloclip you get 3 different lenses for well under a hundred euros. So it is clear that blurring and color shifts occur on the edge of the photos. Such things can only be compensated for with a multi-stage lens system - and the Olloclip is technically simply too far removed from that.

Videos with the Olloclip? That is also possible!

Of course you can also record videos with the lenses of the [Olloclip->olloclip]. It should be noted, however, that when using the fisheye lens you do not have the typical “round” corners with black in the video. Since the focal length is longer when shooting video, the fisheye lens only has the effect of a wide-angle lens here. The corners are filled normally, like in a wide-angle shot with a still camera.

Olloclip lens: good photo accessories for the iPhone? - our conclusion

We looked at various photos that were taken with the iPhone 5 and the Olloclip. The quality is - if you take the price of the system into account - from our point of view okay. Of course, there are always customers who complain about blurring or chromatic aberrations because they do not take into account the technical possibilities in the price segment of the Olloclip adapter. But if you really want high-quality photos, you will hardly ever be out and about with the iPhone 5 and take photos with clip-on lenses. You can easily get high quality with a DSLR camera and high quality lenses.

For those who can live with minor weaknesses and who like to take photos with their iPhone, the Olloclip lens will be a nice addition to their sphere of activity. Personally, I think, for example, the close-ups that are possible with the iPhone 5 could be a bit closer to the object. The macro lens is a great extension for this. And for many indoor shots, for example to capture birthday tables or other groups of people in narrow spaces, the fish-eye or wide-angle attachment is perfect.

So from my personal point of view, the adapter is definitely a purchase recommendation. However, if you don't take photos with your iPhone a lot, you won't miss it.

  1. I can well imagine that for indoor shots with a bit of wide angle (like dining tables with a few more people) the lens does its job quite well. But since it is put on by hand, I assume that inaccuracies of fit have a very strong effect on macro exposures, right?

    1. Hello Uncle Juxtapoint!
Yes, the Olloclip is perfect for indoor shots when it comes to capturing a complete meal table or something similar on a photo. It is also helpful if you want to take a photo of yourself and 1-2 people out of hand. With the normal iPhone lens you have to have long monkey arms for that. If you use the wide-angle Olloclip or the fisheye, you can easily take self-portraits with friends.
Regarding your question about the accuracy of fit: That is of course correct - if it does not sit properly over the lens, you get strange distortions. But the Olloclip is built in such a way that you attach it to the iPhone 5 and then it has its stop on the left and on the top of the iPhone. This means that if I slide it open as far as possible, then it is always in exactly the right position. The problem with attaching it at an angle is more likely with other iPhone additional lenses, which are fixed to the iPhone with the help of a magnet and a metal ring. Theoretically, you can add these imprecisely and then the photos will no longer be good. But there is no such problem with the Olloclip.
      Best regards!
      Jens
