Chapter in this post:
What is the difference between QLED and OLED in TVs? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the technologies? In this guide you will find answers to these and other questions. Because where QLED represents an advanced construction of LED TVs with backlighting, OLED is based on a completely unique technology with diodes that themselves emit light. Both offer good contrasts, a bright picture and TVs with large resolutions up to 4K or even 8K. Nevertheless, there are differences in the comparison of QLED vs. OLED that you should consider when buying. This is important for families, gamers and casual viewers, for example.
The QLED technology was brought onto the market by the manufacturer Samsung through televisions and is called “Quantum Dot LED” or “Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diodes” in English. What is meant here are LEDs in addition to the usual layers and filters in the TV structure, as well as another layer, the one with the quantum dots. This quantum dots layer helps to create lighter images, make black areas darker and make colors appear stronger. LED televisions have a backlight, which makes the black in the picture look gray and colors can be washed out. With a QLED television, the picture appears “more real” than with other LED TVs.
The abbreviation OLED, which looks similar, stands for “Organic Light Emitting Diode” or “Organic Light Emitting Diode”. These do not require any background lighting because they emit light themselves, and thus ensure really black black, rich colors and a sharp image without an additional quantum dot layer. In addition to televisions and monitors, OLEDs are also used in display panels for smartphones, tablets and flexible displays. The advantages are a fast response time with good sharpness and a clear picture even with a narrow viewing angle. OLEDs were first used by LG for televisions. In the meantime, Loewe, Sony, Philips and Co. also offer such devices.
When comparing QLED vs. OLED, one cannot say per se that one technology is better than the other. Rather, it depends on the use and the place of use. For example, if you want to connect a computer or console for gaming, then you should use an OLED television or monitor because it offers a clear picture and fast response times. If you prefer to watch TV and stream, and in a bright room (living room with south-facing windows), then the bright picture of a QLED TV is worthwhile. If you use the output device primarily with a Mac or PC, I would again recommend OLED and the use of dark mode, because this saves electricity.
Here I have embedded a bestseller list for QLED TVs for you. It comes from Amazon and updates itself. So you will always find the best televisions with Quantum Dot LED. Not only Samsung is there with good and very good rated TVs.

In the comparison of QLED vs. OLED, there is no one winner who can beat the other on all points. Rather, the individual technologies offer their own advantages and disadvantages. QLED is worthwhile if you want to watch high-contrast television and / or if you want to do this in a bright room. With OLED you are well advised if you prefer self-luminous pixels that display black areas really black and at the same time deliver rich colors and a sharp image. Since there is no backlight, only the pixels consume electricity. If you use dark mode, you tend to save money with an OLED monitor on your computer. From this and the gamer's point of view, I would use OLED televisions.
