Reader question: Can I mute individual contact groups on the iPhone?

How can you mute or mute certain contact groups on the iPhone so that they do not disturb you on vacation?

Today I got a - sounding almost desperate - question from a reader:

How can I create contact groups in my iPhone 6s and switch off a "work" group, for example.
So that I am not disturbed by messages and calls from work on my vacation?
But I don't want to turn off the whole iPhone because I also use it privately.

I would appreciate a quick answer.

The answer and the alternative

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, as far as I know, there are no settings for groups on the iPhone. I just checked my iPhone and I can't “mute” a whole group. Actually, there aren't even any settings for groups if I've seen it correctly.

What could be used as a recommendable alternative is the "Please do not disturb" function (or "do not disturb" in English menus), in which you can completely mute your iPhone, but still give favorites the right to use this function to "break through". For example, you get the busy signal the first time you call if an iPhone user has activated this function. But if I call again within two minutes, the iPhone passes me through and the doorbell rings.

In your case, for example, you could mark all your private contacts as "favorites", while the work contacts do not become favorites. The favorites can then continue to call and send messages while the contacts are blocked from work.

I use the "do not disturb" system time-controlled so that, for example, before 8 a.m. and after 22 p.m. I only receive calls and messages from selected people. But you can still see all messages when the iPhone is unlocked and you are doing something on it anyway.

I think this is a good function to have a bit of rest on vacation!

In any case, I wish you a relaxing and wonderful vacation, if it is still coming!

Greetings!

Really ... I'm supposed to spend 1000 € on a phone that can't selectively mute individual contacts? Every € 70 Android rifle can do that.

If you've read the article carefully, you'll see that it doesn't even say you should buy an iPhone X. You cannot mute individual contacts even with an iPhone SE of 250 EUR. But I guess your concern is more Apple bashing, so my comments probably don't matter anyway. Just do it like me: Stay away from Android websites and leave no comment there about how impossible it is to have missing feature XY. That helps everyone ... ;-)
