Instructions: Repair iPhone 4 Home Button without changing

Repairing the iPhone 4 home button: you don't always have to change the button. Sometimes cleaning helps too! (Photos: Sir Apfelot)

A few days ago a friend told me that the home button on her iPhone 4 would no longer work. Undoubtedly a very annoying mistake ... Since she bought the device privately a year ago, there was of course no guarantee without something similar to have the thing repaired. Her first thought was that you have to change the home button here so that you can use the iPhone again.

Often works: clean the iPhone home button instead of changing it

Having the button replaced was more of my second choice, because taking an iPhone 4 apart is something for watchmakers in disguise - nothing for gross motorists like me. Even if the home button exchange set is relatively inexpensive to purchase, I wanted to choose the exchange as the last option, because I had already read that the home button can also be repaired quite well with a cleaning. So here was the right test object to check this rumor.

Instructions: Clean the home button with alcohol

To clean the iPhone 4 home button (also works with the iPhone 4s home button) you need alcohol and something to dose the alcohol drop by drop. I just took a teaspoon with it. I used isopropyl alcohol (79%) as alcohol, which could be found on the bathroom shelf. I think you can certainly take others with more percent. I cannot say whether alcohol should also be used, as I have no experience with it - but it could in principle work just as well.

You now pour a little alcohol into the teaspoon, lay the iPhone flat and try to drip a drop of alcohol onto the recess of the home button. Once you've done that, you keep pressing the home button for 1-2 minutes. As a result, the alcohol gets into the mechanics and electrics of the home button and cleans them. If there is still no improvement after the first drop, you can repeat the process 2-3 times and maybe try your luck again the next day.

I cleaned the home button on my problem iPhone with 79% isopropyl alcohol from the drugstore - it worked wonderfully.

Conclusion: repair through cleaning successful!

In my case, it was already noticeable after the first drop that the home button was easier to press. After the second drop and the corresponding "pushing in" the functionality was restored. A change was now out of the world and the iPhone 4 can certainly do its job for another year or two (it only got a new battery a few months ago!).

I hope my instructions help you with your home button problem. I would appreciate your feedback in the comments!
