Reset Apple Watch: Erase data with and without an iPhone

Erase Apple Watch, reset to factory settings

If you want to reset your Apple Watch, you can do this via the corresponding iPhone app or directly via watchOS. Especially if you want to sell or give away the Apple Watch, it is worth doing a factory reset. In this way you can be sure that your personal and device-related data will not be resold with the watch. In this guide you will find instructions on how to reset your Apple Watch as well as a recommendation on how to get more out of the watch!

Resetting the Apple Watch to factory settings or decoupling from the iPhone works with and without a smartphone. Instructions, differences between the two methods and help with other topics: available here!

Reset Apple Watch via iPhone app

The first of two paths takes you through the iPhone to the Apple Watch App to be able to reset. There you have to decouple the two mobile devices, which automatically leads to a factory reset of the Apple Watch. To do this before you sell, give it away or use it with another iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Place the Apple Watch and iPhone close together so that the connection is established
  2. On iOS, opens the Apple Watch app
  3. Tap on My clock and then on your Apple Watch
  4. Now tap on the circled i next to the clock to be decoupled
  5. Tap on Unpair Apple Watch
  6. With the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) you now have to choose whether the cellular tariff should be retained (see below)
  7. Tap again to confirm; you may need to enter the Apple ID password
  8. When unpairing, the Apple Watch is deleted, but a backup is created on the iPhone for a new connection

Erase Apple Watch without iPhone

But even without an Apple iPhone, the Apple Watch can be reset and deleted for sale or transfer. So you can have it paired by the new user without worrying about your data - and you can also securely pair a "clean" watch after buying a used model. But now to the instructions for decoupling without an iPhone:

  1. Dial on the Apple Watch Settings -> General -> Reset to default -> Delete settings & content
  2. With the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) you now have to choose whether the cellular tariff should be retained (see below)
  3. Tap on Delete everythingif you want to reset the clock to factory settings

Series 3 cellular contract

If you want to decouple the Apple Watch, you will find the note when typing in the settings that the mobile phone contract with the Apple Watch Series 3 (2017) can be retained or terminated with mobile communications. If you only unpair the Apple Watch for troubleshooting and then pair it again, then you should keep the tariff. If the Apple Watch and iPhone are not to be connected again, you can remove the cellular tariff. However, you have to finally terminate the mobile phone contract with the provider - this is also necessary if you want to pair the Apple iPhone and / or the Apple Watch with a new counterpart.
